Once the safety plug is out it would be pretty darn hard to electrocute oneself. The safety plug comes out before any of the high voltage wiring is exposed. That breaks the current path through the modules in the pack. To go for the big zap one would have to plant two different body parts on opposite sides of one of two gaps in the circuit, and then short the other gap with a conductor.

Conversely, it is really easy to screw up putting that safety plug back in, usually by forgetting to do so, but in some cases by not setting it properly. This results in a heart stopping (not literally!) moment of panic when the car throws a code at a point in the repair when it should have started normally. This doesn't damage anything beyond the repair person's pride though.

Putting the safety plug back in while the pack covers are off is a big no no.

battery rebuilding can be iffy, so be prepared for potential future problems.

I mis-spoke, it's not rebuilding. WRT the mechanic I was referred to: "He has different ages of batteries available with different amounts of warranties for different costs."

I just watched this video on how to replace your Gen 2 battery, and it looks like a lot of work, even with a superb video like this. A commenter said it took him 9 hours, which sounds about right. It weighs 80 lbs and I don't know that we could lift that together. Given all he's done for me, I wouldn't want to ask him to take on such a huge task at such a busy time. There are many steps and countless ways that things could go wrong. I'll discuss with him when he gets back in town but looks better to me to hire someone.

Wow, that does sound like a great deal, thanks so much for letting me know! However he says it's for a Gen 3 and my Prius is a 2004, or Gen 2. :(

The title says gen2. For $1400 I would spend a couple hundred more for new oem.

The problem with new is that you’re going to have to pay for labor

He is saying that the modules will fit in a gen 3 battery case, which is correct, but it is a gen 2 battery and a straight swap with yours

Is there a way to send private messages on this forum?

It must be someone who has a gen 2 Prius who bought a battery in 2022.

How is OEM different from this one, other than being brand spanking new? I was quoted $3500 from the dealership to install a new battery.

Just that, it is a couple of years old, not brand new. The guy offered to install it, but it is not clear whether the installation is included in the price.

There are aftermarket battery modules which do not last nearly as long as oem, Sometimes two years instead of ten.

OEM would only come from the dealer?

Usually. There are a few independents who buy from a dealer (at $1600 or less) and perform install services. Like Hometown Hybrids in Houston. A two year old oem battery never needs to be rejuvenated.
