Aisin is the OEM for the water pump.

Pretty much everyone who has posted in this thread knows that.

Aisin makes the water pumps with Toyota logos on them that Toyota buys from them to sell to you at dealers.

Aisin also makes the Aisin pumps with the Toyota logos ground off that Toyota does not buy from them, and you can.

What are your beliefs about how Aisin decides which of the pumps they have made they will sell to Toyota, and which ones they will grind the Toyota logo off of and sell to you?

One thing is for sure, if you buy the coolant pump from a Toyota dealership,
you have a 99% chance that you are getting a good coolant pump.

You keep using "OEM pump" to apparently refer to a Genuine Toyota pump, but an authentic Aisin WPT-190 would also be an "OEM pump" in the most common and correct usage of the word. I think you should be more precise with your terms.

Unless we get an Aisin insider to dish the dirt, we will never know what differences, if any, there are between a Genuine Toyota pump and an Aisin one.

Do you really want to know my thoughts? My speculations aren't really any better than anyone else's.

Chapman has a very hard time comprehending that AISIN makes so many of these to sell to Toyota globally and he actually assumes that Toyota goes and tests each of them and sends the bad ones back to AISIN.

Then he thinks AISIN sells these defective units and grinds the Toyota logo off.

The only truth is that AISIN grinds the Toyota logo off.

Remember they make so many that not all of them will be sold and they have a lot in stock and would rather offload them cheaper and grind Toyota off.

Chapman does not know how the business side goes with parts when it comes to time and money.

Each Toyota location will buy all they can or need and just put them on a shelf and not even test them, they are relying on AISIN to do quality control on their product.

Also Toyota does not care how long a part lasts, they will just sell you another one.

If you're going to say I "keep using" that term that way, I hope you can find at least one example.

Can you link to one, even one, post anywhere on PriusChat where I have ever said that I assume that?

    So far so good....

Excellent, so we agree that Aisin has a QA program of some kind.

And that some of the pumps that roll off their line get sold to Toyota, and some instead get their logos ground off and sold elsewhere.

If you want, you can assume their QA program has nothing, nothing at all, to do with that selection process.

True enough. So some of us may assume that the selection of pumps for Toyota vs. pumps for logo-grinding is completely random and has nothing to do with QA, and some of us may assume that it is not completely random.

Both are assumptions. Both will remain assumptions until we get an Aisin insider to dish the dirt.

If that ever happens, then we'll know ...

... whether that's the case or not. (AFAIK, the "most common and correct usage of the term" has not just a "same manufacturer" prong, but a "to the same specifications" prong. That's the part we don't know until that Aisin insider shows up.)

Until then, it comes down to who finds which assumption more plausible.

Aisin could easily make a casting without the Toyota logo and then not have to manually grind off each logo.

I believe Aisin tests or inspects each pump prior to sending to Toyota’s just in time inventories. Of course Toyota owns part of Aisin through two companies (~25% and 8%).

The issue in this thread seems to be the Amazon seller.

There is some evidence in the reviews the vendor sells used or rebuilt parts at least some of the time.

I have actually communicated with AISIN on Amazon and gave them the Toyota part number of the said water pump and asked if there was any kind of difference between the two.

    There is no difference...

rjparker....why in the hell would AISIN spend more money to create another one without the Toyota logo for the water pump when all they have to do is grind it off?

    Remember time is money.

There are other cheap brands that do that
I actually have one of them installed right now from Ebay.

My next purchase of a water pump would be the AISIN one and it is the same quality as the more expensive one on the Toyota dealers shelf.

So you believe Aisin is selling used or rebuilt pumps on Amazon? Or the buyers are lying about receiving used parts or parts that fail quickly. Or there are no counterfeits being offered as Aisin or Toyota? I choose to believe whoever is selling on Amazon is not worried about quality or reliability for their Amazon customers.

In the end it remains buyer beware.

Bought the aisin pump -- from Amazon. Is it real or counterfeit?!

"It is not oem and could be counterfeit or a manufacturing second"

    also,

"Do we hear of new Oem pumps or almost anything from the dealer supply chain failing? No. If I change an oem pump it is with another oem pump."

No, that is NOT what I am saying rjparker.

AISIN will have in their inventory tons of NOS=New Old Stock and those that do not get purchased from Toyota, they will after a period of time grind the Toyota logo off and sell them cheaper.

In order for them to sell any type of "used" water pump it would be classed as Refurbished (RB)

I have never seen a listing of a refurbished AISIN water pump, only (NOS) with Toyota logo grinded off.

This, I take it, is your summary of a response you got when you inquired of AISIN selling on Amazon?

But you heard from a colleague about the idea of a possibility of AISIN selling lower quality water pumps that have Toyota logo ground off right...chapman

Yah I'm not going to risk it with the Amazon scratch off pump. Thanks for all your input in this thread, some wisdom in here.

Mendel says Asayama is legit, and my USA-shipped total price is $130.67 from them -- cheaper than Amazon, woot! My local (st)(d)ealer total price is 387.04 + tax, yikes!

I'll report in if there is a name scratch-off on the pump from Asayama.

FYI, Tampa Hybrids (local shop) does new dealer-sourced water pump + new coolant for $600.
