Most interesting things to me - they grew the engine 20% bigger but only increased hp by 1%. Other sources say the rich mixture used in the previous engine to cool it (which makes it less efficient) isn't in the new engine electronics. That makes it easier on the valve train (which now lowers friction) and cuts off some of the most inefficient parts of the engine power curve. Germany changed this regulation but really it has not hurt the performance and porsche decided to comply instead of asking for a waiver (source car and driver). The electronic turbo (really a turbo with an electronic motor that acts like a supercharger to spin up, and a generator to slow down) adds more boost, less lag, and likely better fuel economy. Really the same hybrid tech could be applied to a 2L which would provide 315 hp. I hope it trickles down to some lesser audi's and other companies cars.

 

I've been following this technology for years now, very excited to see more development. BMW and Subaru have both put some money into similar.

 

Difference in the turbo arrangement? Power ratings are measured pass the point where lag and the added electric supercharger is involved.

An electric supper/turbo charger and the addition of other electric accessories to assist with power, emissions, and efficiency is part of why ICE cars will be replaced by mild hybrids in the minimum.

 

Well yes max hp doesn't count lag. But this single electric turbo provides more boost than the twin turbos it is replacing. It can do that because of decreased lag because of the electronic supercharging. Waste gate was also removed since excess exhaust can be used to charge the battery. The lack of increase in power is because they no longer allow a rich mixture to cool the engine at high power settings. That causes them to retard spark and not use as much fuel in the inefficient zone. That's why something that could be over 20% turns out to be 1%. Still this means it probably can be chipped and gain 20%+ more horsepower, although I don't know if the transmission is built for it. The WLTP and epa tests will now show the lower pollution or higher efficiency as they do not push these cars to that acceleration. The electric motor means the combo is 10% higher hp than the outgoing engine, but acceleration to 60 can utilize 20% more power because of the lack of lag in the electric motor and the turbo.

Now porsche like mercedes has followed f1 into electric turbocharging. Both use bosch turbos, and I hope this helps push the price down to other less powerful cars. The f1 hybrids restrict the amount of fuel, so the more efficient the car the faster it can drive and still finish the race.
