Typically, I've started my Gen 2 yard-Prius every month or so. Now I took a 3 month break from doing that out of laziness. Wouldn't start.

So I took a good 12v battery out of my other Gen 2 Prius and tried putting in the non-starting Prius. Get a couple of dashlights and headlights work but it doesn't get into "start" mode or engine revving.

Does that mean I've killed the MAIN battery?

    Now what do I do?

EDIT: I tried deleting this thread but don't know how.

Basically, I have 2 Prius and maybe 5 keys. I attached the wrong key to this one's spare and actually had to use the Autel Prius Diagnosis App for it to give me a "wrong key" trouble code (shocked that this was put into app tbh).

Guess these are the type of problems one has when he has several cars of the same model ( Two working Gen 2 and one wrecked Gen 2 sitting in my yard)

Actually the Autel scan gave me the P0A080 Code (which is replace hybrid battery pack), however the car started and I ran it for 20 minutes after this diagnosis.

Did the HV battery recharge at all? Should I leave the car running for a specified amount of time to allow the HV battery to recharge? Some other thread said if the main dashboard screen has 1 or 2 bars of battery (which mine currently does) that means that there is at least 40% charge and it ideally has to go up to 80%.

How can this be done easily? Leaving the car running (mind you I used to leave the car running for an hour or so every 2weeks to month until I got lazy with it...at the time it always had several bars on the battery main dashscreen).

    thoughts?

The hybrid system only partially charges the hv battery when idling. The engineers must of thought no one would waste gas in a Prius by sitting there and idling. You have to drive the car a few miles to get it fully charged and then shut it off.

There is a forced charged hack Dr Prius suggests when running there questionable life expectancy test. I don’t recommend it in part because driving is so much better to lubricate everything, exercise the brakes, avoid tire flat spotting and to get the engine up to temperature.

So idling only partially charges the hv battery and causes engine thermal cycling by never getting to temp. The engine temp will rise to maybe 116f the first charge cycle, rise to perhaps 150f the second cycle, drop 20-30 degrees, rise again and so on. Thermal cycling is not good for a head gasket on an all aluminum engine.

Drive the car I do this with cars without tags on them up and down my street all the time never a problem and I pull back in my driveway with a green battery or close to it and shut it off for another 3 weeks

I am afraid to drive the car without tags/license because I suspect it will be one time I get pulled over for something. Plus Iive in a high traffic area so afraid of getting in an accident with this uninsured Prius.

Thinking of making sure there is plenty of gas in the tank, using a stick between the gas pedal and the drivers seat to set the throttle on low and leave it for an hour or so.

Any other thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated! (as are your previous replies).

Leave it on low now that that's that's no good If anything you'd have to come up with a way to apply the brake and put it in drive and let it sit at about I don't know 2000 RPMs or something and even then but you have to do what you have to do for the particular situation you're in usually I find a side street and run up and down in a few times and pull in the driveway I'm well known where I am so I can get away with this and the only accident I'm going to have is running off the road in the ditch or something or somebody's going to hit me not for any particular reason but you won't be my fault plus I'm way out in the country so it's a completely different situation.

Wow things are really that bad in that area of Ohio really I hate to hear that I guess that's why we don't drive out that way since the '80s or so things have gotten so screwed up We just fly straight to California Colorado whatever it is we got to do You don't drive anymore because of risk is too great and get killed out on them roads for nothing you know just be another internet story . But I didn't think if you lived in that part of Ohio things could would really be too bad etc etc but you have to gauge that on a personal level

OK, wait so you have to apply the brakes as well to get the HV to recharge?

If that's the case I'll wait till around 1am and drive it on the highway for a bit.

And YES....traffic is crazy. So many speeders & people who ignore traffic signals that it makes any trip a risk. I usually proceed very cautiously when a traffic light is changing because i know so many people try to make through even if the light has been RED for a few seconds. Avoided many accidents this way by slowing down through intersections.

Yeah I do that too and I generally don't trust a turn signal that's coming at me because the quality of the humans that we're dealing with a lot today shoor you better be ready to be crushed And someone standing there shrugging their shoulders wondering what the heck they're doing and then the police show up and don't know what the hell they're doing and finally the rescue crew gets there maybe you'll get to the hospital in a timely manner No no thank you

    Read my post again.

It will partially charge sitting in Ready. Not fully and you get thermal cycling.

Tom is describing the Dr Prius forced charge method. Not good for your situation.

Drive the car periodically or sell it.

OK. Will do. Just wondering....can I drive the car stop and go around 25mph for about 30minutes to an hour OR drive on the freeway at 60mph for same time as above and charge it equally or is one superior (latter is minimal braking)?

It does not matter. The transaxle can drive the car and charge at the same time. Just try it.
