Toyota dealership wants to install new main battery

Did the dealership give you the trouble codes that they found? If so, please list them.

Check to see if the Hybrid battery is still in warranty. I believe it is 10 years or 150k miles, whichever comes first.

Your in the gen4 forum, so a 2016 battery should still be under warranty or just out of warranty. I believe they are warrantied for 8 years or 100K miles. Beginning in 2020, the traction battery warranty went to 10 years or 150K miles. If your just outside of manufacturer's warranty, ask for a "good will" replacement, this usually works if your a loyal customer and had all your work done there.
The other alternative is to look for a traction pack out of a front end wreck.

get the trouble codes from the dealer if you paid for them. it is possible that you need a new battery on a 16 year old car, but it is also possible that the corrosion could be cleaned up.
you will need a battery eventually if not soon, and $2,700. is a pretty good dealer price.

 

If you knew it was just one terminal that was corroded you wouldn't have sent it to the dealer for diagnosis. So you're opening post is quite misleading. It's like you're bashing the dealer and they haven't even done anything other than diagnose it. Sounds like you know more than they do and you should fix it yourself because you're clearly a hybrid certified qualified trained ASE certified Toyota master tech.

They're not going to clean a terminal and then have you come back with a car that needs a whole battery pack later only to have you complaining that they should eat the bill. Sounds like you would complain no matter what they do. You are the customer I refuse to do work for.

I'm seeing this in the generation 2 for him I don't know I don't even see the generation for forum in my list and I'm getting ready to remove the generation 3 for him because well you know. But yeah this sounds like a whole hullabaloo story here anyway there you go I don't know if I would come to Prius chat to complain about the dealer but yeah cool sounds like maybe mom and dad had more to do with this than whoever this is I don't know You're in Virginia so most people I know in the Virginia's don't be running to the dealer that much until they feel they're forced to because of knowledge problems or what have you anyway good luck 2750 The battery not too long ago was 1650 cash and carry I'm sure the dealer is only paying about $1,400 for the battery if not less and then they're making $1,300 to put a few screws down and put the panels back in I do that in 30 minutes or something similar so I could have saved myself 1300 some odd dollars but then retail prices of the batteries just changed for most people unless you have a dealer account at the Toyota dealer so there's always that If this is happening right now that's a pretty good deal actually

 

You would have done nothing but play whack-a-mole and been here complaining for a month about whatever you'd be complaining about so this year will eliminate that right out of the box next you'll be dealing with the break actuator and maybe the CM monitor display we'll see how fast you maybe get out of the car I don't know Good luck with it It's a great car to deal with if you can deal with things in general.

 

mileage is actually good for these batteries, usage keeps them balanced. without the trouble codes, there's not much we can say except maybe, maybe not

 

I really hate to add to your paranoia, but I don't know any dealerships that will just change one battery in a traction pack. They usually sell you a whole new pack. A legitimate dealership will worry about the warranty aspect of changing that one module - if another module fails within your warranty period - how do they deny your warranty claim? You know there have been many here that have already tried that. Some get another month out of the car and others get several years - It's a "crap shoot". Do your own due diligence...
