That isn't how I read it. While it does show 5 on the cover, it also says "plus more inside".

I read it as a listing of vehicles that meet all of these screening criteria:
(*) CR 'Recommended', which requires good performance scores and a certain set of safety features;
(*) NHTSA crash scores of at least 4 stars;
(*) IIHS crash scores above a certain level;
(*) at least one year of free Automatic Crash Notification.

About 67 vehicle models pass this screen and are listed inside. The 5 shown on the cover are just a sampling, each one an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ choice from a different vehicle category, and not necessarily the highest scoring choice in its category. E.g. the Mazda CX-30 shown on the cover is actually the lowest scoring choice in its category, in fact it has the lowest CR score of this entire list while still passing their screening criteria.

So don't stop at the cover, look inside too. CR's list of its "The Safest Top-Rated Cars" takes 5 pages, plus several more pages for review and explanation.

P.S. I don't expect all readers here to agree with CR's screening criteria. E.g. 9 EVs pass this screen, but no Teslas.

CR doesn't like how Tesla does BSM, nor does Tesla subscribe to the near universal naming convention for ADAS features.

Suprising is that Toyota just barely makes the cut in a small number of categories. And Tesla... They used to dominate and now they're mentioned even less than Toyota.

This little unknown car continues to show up in almost all - the best of ratings. Most individuals would never have even heard of a Niro yet it will get close to 60 mpg, 33 miles of electric range and go over 600 miles on a tank of gas - all while getting - the safest car to drive in its class.
Base models HEV's starting at under $27,000 , Plug in Hybrids at $33,000 and BEV's at $37,000.

Toyota Prius finished in 2nd place with an equally outstanding showing.

Volvo is part of Geely now, so no longer actually Swedish, Geely is a major Chinese manufacturer of EV's under a lot of different big brand names .... not saying this is a bad thing, but pushing ads with a Swedish accented voice over is rather deceptive advertising me thinks .....

They are still their own company headquartered is Sweden.
Was it deceptive while they were owned by Ford? That's the time period Volvo introduced their auto braking systems.

 

:lol: Having just added 4 more vehicles to the fleet, with only two of us that have driver's licences and 3 of them the wife doesn't have the class of licence to drive, I doubt I'll ever be at the stage of buying my last vehicle .... it will still be on the delivery truck as they send me off I reckon ...... They'll probably do one of those special online site auctions to clear them out once I can't put up enough of a fight to not part with any of them

I'm scared to ring them about insuring this new to us unit ..... ummmm..... make that 5 more vehicles added to the fleet, the remains of the last motorhome is still stuck in the driveway in front of what was once our house and beside what was once my garage with all the new stuff I'd just bought to replace att the gear I lost when our business workshop burnt to the ground 15 mths ago
Still, who gets to start again with clean slate at 69? I don't even have to sort out the clothes that don't fit any more or the shoes I no longer wear

I believe they were still manufactured in plants in Sweden then, they are now produced in a mega factory in China ....
Does this mean they will vanish from the US market or be so over priced to not be really available over there?

They still have plants in Sweden, Belgium, and the US running today.
