If there is no plug on the car, then all the energy to move it was supplied by gasoline no matter whether the engine was running or not.

 

Sure, but the car shows a super-high instantaneous MPG whenever it's moving without the engine, instead of trying to compute the gallons that went into making the watthours it's now using and show you that. It should all work out in a long-term average, but the short-term display exaggerates.

Some Prius models come with a way to put energy in other than through the fuel filler neck.

 

I thought the post I replied to was calling the average mpg not true.

On the a PHEV. Calculating mpg on just the gasoline used and not the electricity from the wall will give a not true result.

With a hybrid, the energy in battery got there by the car burning gas; directly through the generator and indirectly through regen braking. Miles divided by the gasoline used gives a true mpg.

In this post,

you appear to be claiming that the miles driven with the engine in a hybrid should not be counted when calculating mpg. If that is what you are saying, then you are wrong. All the energy in the hybrid's battery to power the car when the engine is off was generated from burning gasoline in the engine when it ran previously.

Your claim is only true in the case of plug in hybrids. Their batteries can contain energy from the grid that was not generated by the car burning gas.

Total costs (in the sum of price, depreciation, fuel cost, repair costs, registration/tax, and insurance minus tax rebates over a long term) are far more impactful than some individual trip fuel costs.

Even charging off solar, the power your battery gains comes sometimes/somewhat from the power to heat or cool your house. So hard to calculate that in.

 

It's so weird someone can't understand that MPG is a basis of weather, terrain, driving Style & speed. You want to figure just mpg? Empty out the battery and then drive 80 miles an hour on flat terrain & 30mpg on flat terrain to get an average. Then the battery won't add anything. You'll get about 28 miles a gallon

 

This is the third, re-invention of traction batteries I've heard about:

• NiMH "D" cell modules - they replaced pairs of prismatic battery cells and spoofed the battery management system.
• NaION modules - Appears to replace pairs of prismatic battery cells but may have re-engineered battery management system.
• BMW i3 replacement pack - also increasing the range to ~250 mi.

This is in addition to rebuilding older Prius traction batteries using salvaged, more modern cells. Every situation is different but overall I throughly agree with traction battery replacement provided no unrepairable problem exists. A problem whose repair costs exceeds by several times the replacement cost of the car. Besides, it can be a fun project.

However, very few people can achieve an average of 93 mpg. Lots of people can get 4.1 miles/kwh in an EV. I get close to 5 on my daily commute averaged over many days. But I completely admire what Wayne showed what can be done.

I'd really like to see if some of the people who posted earlier have some opinions now that they have it for a while. As a user of the V1 and the 2.5 my initial opinion of those too was favorable. Now that they have lived with it for a while..

Honestly, if there was nothing wrong with the car and I planned to keep it for years to come, I'd sooner just get an OEM battery and be happy knowing that if I was replacing the traction battery after 13 years of ownership, that the new OEM would outlive the rest of the car's useful life. At least where I live, cars don't usually make it to 20, let alone 25+ years of age without major issues like rust making it a fool's errand to spend large sums to repair a vehicle of such a vintage.

I didn't even want to spend 1400 to fix the A/C in my 03 matrix 2 months ago. Summer gets hot but we don't get multiple straight weeks of 30C+ weather. We had a heat wave last week where we hit a little over 43C with humidex, but this past week its been in the high 20s. As long as I'm not stuck on the highway in gridlocked traffic, the windows do just fine considering I expect some rusting rock chips on my roof skin will let water in sometime in the next 2 years and the car will need to be scrapped.

 

Just keeps getting better, and yes I do hand calculate to confirm accuracy. 56mpg avg summer, 24 mile commute w/600ft elevation gain/loss. 185/60 15 very worn at wearbars 40psi.
