Question for Prime owners: How sensitive/annoying are the eye cameras, really?

No, that was the entire list of stuff. I'd probably have to take it in to get software updated/configured, but that was the complete parts list. Current cars have surprisingly few modules compared to the 2000s and early 2010s.

Upgrade firmware to add features & the flashing hardware are not likely readily available.

Worst comes to worst, I'd use the excuse to buy a used Mongoose off ebay and get the $70 two-day diagnostic subscription to Global TechStream.

I've sent an email to a salvage yard that has a Prime to see if I can get the parts for super cheap. I wouldn't install them right away, but I wouldn't mind having them sitting on my shelf in case I get really bored some weekend. :)

It Is extremely annoying, turning it off is the very first thing that I do every time I turn the car on.... I'm really afraid of getting the three buttons needed to perform such operation to prematurely ruin.

You are referring to the driver monitoring camera? It can be turned off in Settings and stays off.

I'm talking about the monitoring system that warms me if I don't look at the road or close my eyes.

I have never got alerts in my 2025 Camry. I stated the steps on my 2025 Camry in post 7 here. Someone else then did it in a Prius.

I think it turns back on when rebooting the car. I guess it's part of the eu new packets of road regulations...thank you again eu....

Perhaps. There are many annoying features such as front cross-traffic alerts that will not stay off on the 2025 Camry.

I have had my 23 Prime XSE Premium for almost 2 years and I have all the safety features enabled, and they do not bother me at all, I appreciate all the safety tech. Sure, the “driver inattention” pops up occasionally, but 90% of the time it is doing it when I looked away for a couple seconds, so it is doing it’s job (as opposed to triggering on a momentary glance at my infotainment or mirrors, etc). Perhaps the only “downside” is you cannot drive with your hand at the 12:00 position, but again, avoiding this driving position is best for our safety given that piece of explosive we have embedded in the steering wheel.. wouldn’t want your arm over top of the wheel and have that go off.

    YMMV.

That said, I do appreciate that the eye monitor can act as a bit of a “nanny” if I need to travel late at night after a long day of work working when I may be a bit fatigued, as I know the car would stimulate me if I ever start getting drowsy or at risk of nodding off… using DRCC in this situation increases safety even further, as it will also follow the lane more aggressively and slow/stop more naturally if approaching another vehicle. Not condoning driving in these conditions of course, but anyone who has juggled long work hours and the sleep deprivation of having small kids and need to travel a considerable distance can surely relate to the additional peace of mind.:)

In my 2025 Camry, I have found the Lane Tracing Assist in DRCC can be inconsistent, oversteering to the edge of the lane, triggering Lane Departure Alert.

It is an assist, not a Level 3+ automated system. It is there to help you stay in lane, not drive the car for you.

Sometimes I do think such events in the Subaru is the system testing to see if you are paying attention.

Same, it helped me break the habit of having my hand in 12 o clock, it probably will save my hand if I ever get into an airbag popping accident.

It sometimes goes off when I'm biting my nails as that's a habit I have, that should also be something I try to break, so that's another plus.

I havent found it intrusive at all, personally. But maybe that's just me. If it was coming on all the time, I'd begin to wonder if I have bad driving habits more than anything else. Those two situations are 90% of when it goes off and thats not even every time I drive the car.

I also don't have issues with the FCTA, it almost never goes off because I'm not usually creeping ahead to turn into a lane when cars are approaching. It is at most a minor inconvenience on one road I use that's busy that needs me to turn left from a stop sign onto a busier road.

Mine is always nagging me. 'Sit up, Eyes on the road, Pay attention, I can't see you" ... Geeez, yes mom! I find the eye thing the most annoying, I spent most of my life driving a stick so my left hand still tends to grab the top of the wheel while my right hand is on the shifter (which causes things like inadvertently turning off traction control or turning on charging mode).

I wear mirrored sun glasses and I haven't had it warn me. I purposely looked away one time to test it and I had to look away for longer than I felt was comfortable to get it to warn me.

As a Prime owner, I'm late to answering but I agree with the few on this thread that are basically saying, overall, it's more a good thing than the opposite and I haven't found a situation yet where I feel I need to turn it off but it's good to know I can if that situation ever came up. I did make a recent Chicago trip, with 4 other passengers, and all the safety features, including the traffic jam thing were helpful and not ever distracting for me and if anything, helped me feel I was being as safe a driver as I can for my passengers.

It's also very likely my brain/eyes/ears have adjusted to mostly "ignore" those warning messages and only heed them as needed.
