I just discovered today that my 2021 Prius Prime is still uploading data to Toyota in real time despite me having opted out when I purchased the car in 2021. I discovered it when I went to book an appointment on the local dealership's Web site and they had the precise mileage of my Prius pre-filled out in their appointment form. Thinking they may have just coincidentally guessed my current mileage, I drove my 41-mile commute to work and checked back on the Web site. The pre-filled mileage was indeed 41 miles more than it had been just an hour earlier.

I have never seen this before, so I'm wondering if the dealership re-activated the system on my last visit or if Toyota has been operating in violation of my opting out for all these years and it only become visible now through some change on the backend at the dealership.

Is there a way after having opted out to REALLY disable telemetry? I'm trying to avoid dealing with all the errors that will come with pulling the fuse that feeds the system, but if that's what I have to do I'll live with the effects.

I believe it's part of your SOS button. While I agree with you that it's an invasion of your privacy and the unit should ONLY be sending location data ONLY when the button is pushed.
If your really concerned with your privacy, do you carry a cell phone? Lots of apps send data in the background. I never understood a person placing a post-it note to cover their laptop camera, yet freely walk around with a duel mode camera on their cell phone that remains uncovered?????
I'm sure there's a way of physically disabling it, but the question is what other functions will that effect?

    Just thinking out loud........

FWIW - I too opted out, hopefully the insurance company can't see my telemetry data.
ie. RSA states the speed limit is 30 mph as I'm jumping on the highway, am I really speeding????

If you hadn’t opted out, was this a case of a trial function becoming paid subscription?

No, from what I recall - you can 'get insurance discounts' if you stayed Opted-in at no charge. I knew about the RSA and was concerned about faulty data as I noted above. I'm assuming it's kinda like the Progressive or metro-mile thing that plugs into your OBD2 for insurance discounts.
The paid portion was remote access to your car via cell phone (ie. pre-cool car outside of FOB range, check charging status, ect..). It was buggy during my free subscription period - Don't know if it has improved....
