New to me 2021 Prius Prime XLE Plug in 110 charger says/takes 8.5 hrs (should be 5.5) New 220 charger says/takes 5 hrs (should be 2) Otherwise running great and gets full 25mi on charge. What to do??? Thanks
Go into your vehicle settings on the dash touchscreen and see what charge current is selected. There's an 8A and 16A setting (and maybe a max setting). Sounds like a lower charge setting is selected. We charge our Gen4 at 8A/120VAC to be as gentle on the battery as possible.
Someone probably set the car to not exceed 8A while charging. Check your settings FWIW; my battery only takes 4.5-5.0 hrs. on 120VAC to recharge for my morning commute.
Found charge settings of "8amp and Max" (16amp I believe) Also read several places that lower amp charging is better for long term battery health (less heat), so since this car already has 120k and I'm going "long" on this car I'll keep it at 8amp and bump it up occasionally if needed. THANKS
The 8 or 16 amp charging from the charger is nothing compared to up to 90 amps of regeneration current every time you step on the brake or coast down a long hill. Discussions here in the past suggest that the difference in battery wear between 8 or 16 amp charging is negligible. The main reason for the 8 amp setting is not for the car; it is for the homeowner who doesn't have 120v circuits in their home that can provide 16 amps for hours; the 16 amp load from the charger would trip the breaker in their home, but 8 amps won't.
Alfonso, since you're 'going long', I recommend that you buy a good quality bluetooth OBD2 dongle like the OBDLink MX or LX. Don't buy a cheap adapter - they just don't work. Then use Dr. Prius to check the status of all 95 of the battery cells. I recently posted the results of that test for my 2020 Prime in the Technical Discussion section. What you want to see is when the battery is at --%, i.e. 0% capacity, the cell voltages are tightly clustered. One or two cells that have a significantly lower voltages is a bad sign. Once you've got the dongle, you can also use Hybrid Assistant to monitor and record an amazing amount of data while you're driving. The report that you can generate is many pages long. You can also use Tire Assistant to check the tire pressures. It's stupid that you can't do this with the car itself, but that's the way it is.
The traction battery is under warranty for another 6 years or 30K miles. It's the accumulated heat and lack of use, that destroys the traction pack. The faster you charge it the more heat is generated. If that heat can't be dissipated fast enough, it starts to shave long term life off the pack. Ditto with a pack that's unused for 3+ months at a time; see long term storage of car in OM. That's why the gen5's went to freon based cooling. IMHO; if you adhere to the OM for the traction pack care, you should be OK. There's plenty of gen2 and gen3 with over 200k, still on their original packs. 2021 Prime has a lithium pack, so Dr Prius is going to give you questionable results if any - since Dr Prius was setup for a NiMH battery pack. I did use that app to turn-off, single beep when I'm in reverse.
Dr. Prius states that it supports "1. 2020+ Prius all lineup except 4WD version" and "4. 2016-2019 Prius Gen4 One, Two, Two Eco, Three(Lithium) and Four(Lithium)". The 2024 Prius uses a lithium-ion battery. So the app appears to understand lithium batteries. Do you see any errors or inconsistencies in the data that I posted in the Technical Discussion section? The most likely errors would be incorrect voltages or wrong number of cells but both are correct. 3V4x is an appropriate voltage for a gently discharged lithium-ion cell. Even if some of the program's functions don't work properly, this test only involves reading measurements that the car made and displaying them. Not a very hard job.
It's posted on the internet so it must be true..... If you don't know what your doing, which is the current ops case; How does he know that the program isn't functioning properly, displaying bad information, or something just out of "left field"? The last time I looked at it, it threw some weird numbers at me - but that was 2021. If the app has been updated/fixed - Great..........
Thanks BIO, OM = Owners manual? IMHO = ??. Traction battery is what in a 2021 Prius Prime? Is that different than the hybrid and or EV battery? What is the best way to store this car for 6 months?
