A few months back, I was passing a construction site, very tired and insufficiently alert, and I heard the disheartening sound of road barriers striking my passenger mirror. The mirror was wrecked, however still functional. I patched it up with duct tape and continued on.

I checked with my dealer, and I was told a new one costs almost $500. I checked the salvaged market, and everyone had the same story; "No one has one, it's just too soon." I decided to wait. Yesterday, I checked again, and I located one about 800 miles away, for $240. The salesperson said it was the only one he had seen available anywhere. Anyhow, it's paid for, and I'm just figuring out how to get it here.

I can have it shipped for $50, but I fancy a trip to the coast right now.

Seems like a bargain, compared to a new one.

    What's so special about it?
None of them are power folding, right?
    Are there sensors in them?

Toyota subscribes to the philosophy: "If you need it, you will pay for it."
It has nothing to do with what it costs to make.

Another reason why it's crazy expensive to drive new cars...

I think its like a rule of thumb in the used auto parts business; half the price of a new one.

No, it is not. The brand-new mirror assembly with heater and BSM light is $295 CAD after dealer discount, which includes tax. So, it's the equivalent of about $190 USD before tax. I wouldn't attempt to put an iffy salvaged part on a brand-new car to save a few dollars.

My point is the age of the car, as well as its abundance defines costs. I can go to any autowrecker in my area and pull a side view mirror off a 2004-2009 Prius for $40 (US).

Or how about a few years ago when I bought a brand new aftermarket side view mirror for a 2012 Prius C that's identical to Yaris and cost $35 and showed up with higher quality materials than an OEM side view mirror?

All the mirrors I've mentioned above are heated mirrors too! There's nothing special about a heated mirror.

Point being all you rich people driving around in new brand cars are not only throwing away massive amounts of money in the depreciation of your vehicle in general, but more specifically when you need a replacement part not covered under warranty you get ripped off even more.

And with the legendary reliability of Prius, saying you need a new one because it's more reliable is BS.

But then again, it's moment's like these that I most enjoy about forums dedicated to the latest Prius model... Been signing up for this kind of penny-pinching preaching since Gen3 was still selling as the newest model. PriusChat will always be a culture of cheapskates no matter hard all you folks who paid way too much for your brand new Prius try to change that!

Or rather "The older generation found a way to enjoy making way more money than most people and can afford new cars, vacations and a retirement plan... Meanwhile kids these days graduate from college with enough student loan debt that they'll never qualify for a home loan and my generation in their 40's and 50's are still holding down more than one full time job, none of which have health care or retirement plans and we're still not making enough money to save for a new car or vacations or anything else for that matter. In fact, these days the only people I know who come into money are the ones who's parents die and leave a massively appreciated home they sell off as their inheritance because they could never afford the property taxes if they kept the home.

We live in a new era where the disparity of wealth has grown so extreme that the people may ultimately have no choice other than to rise up and wipe out all the finances of billionaires and redistribute it to people who actually need it.
