What happened to Times Roman type? My new MS Word defaulted to Calibri

Apparently Calibri is "woke", being easier to read for people with vision troubles.

Schools in my day required Times New Roman, so I assume it is what a significant number of folks are used to using. I also changed the default for Word 2024. Anything else just looks wrong

But, whatever works for you.

Rubio says Calibri is DEI:

"Then-Secretary of State Antony Blinken ordered the 2023 typeface shift on the recommendation of the State Department’s office of diversity and inclusion, which Rubio has since abolished. The change was meant to improve accessibility for readers with disabilities, such as low vision and dyslexia, and people who use assistive technologies, such as screen readers.

Calibri, sometimes described as soft and modern, is typically considered more accessible for people with reading challenges thanks to its simpler shapes and wider spacing, which make its letters easier to distinguish. Blinken’s move was applauded by accessibility advocates.

But Rubio’s order rejected the grounds for the switch. The change, he allowed, “was not among the department’s most illegal, immoral, radical or wasteful instances of DEIA,” the acronym for diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility. But Rubio called it a failure by its own standards, saying that “accessibility-based document remediation cases” at the department had not declined."

 

I suppose we're now to agree that anyone with visual impairment is self-evidently not herrenmenschlich enough to qualify for any desk job in the department of state, and should instead perhaps die, and decrease the surplus population.

Edit: not to mention also people with hearing impairment at press briefings

Has Rubio just held a grudge that long?

 

My preference in TextPad is Fixedsys:



Just utilitarian, easy to read, monospaced. Appreciate it's not gonna cut it, for "executive orders"...

 

I do find Calibri and Ariel easier to read on a screen, but can appreciate where serifs can be needed for some letters.

On another note, once heard Comic Sans can be easier to write with. Its unseriousness can overcome blocks from overthinking and need for perfection.

Adding to the font subject is that licensing might be needed to use some.

For some reason, I've read an awful lot of stuff that was typeset in Computer Modern.
