We have routine maintenance done on our 2020 Prius Prime yesterday and guess what ? They did not try to upsell me anything ! It seems like they have a new manager in the service department and it was a better experience than last time.

Anyhow, the service rep offered a bit of self-help advice to get some Sea Foam fuel additive and add it about every 3 or 4 tanks, he said it might be especially helpful if you do a lot of stop and go driving.

Most of our miles is from expressway driving though, when we stay in our small town we only use the EV mode as it would be very rare for us to drive more than 25 miles in a day in our very small town.

Would it be worth doing or not ?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I dump some Techron through every oil change, mainly to keep the fuel injectors clean. I know that stuff isn't going to hurt the CAT, never researched the Seafoam stuff. There are several YouTube videos that has varying results. Lets be real; it's something your adding into your fuel system that isn't going to fix any mechanical damage to your engine has already suffered - Snake-oil at best.
IMHO; the best results is a gentle scrub of your internals. Dumping highly caustic chemicals in a system, not designed for it will remove huge chunks and likely clog your fuel system - creating a problem that wasn't there before. Just because something states that it's going to do a job in ONE go; is the wrong question to ask. The correct question is; will it make my problem worse? Techron is specifically designed for fuel systems and readily available.

After following this forum and watching folks having issues with their EGRs, I had a long talk with my mechanic. He runs a quart of Seafoam through the intake manifold with every oil change [twice a year].

That's a lot better than running it through your fuel system, but what does it do to the CAT? If your in one of those states that doesn't have stricter emissions standards - that could be an easy fix. For CARB states; that would be a very expensive mistake. IMHO

Just a side-note; the gen3 is know to clog - but the gen4 system runs much cleaner. A couple of people tore open a gen4 EGR system and they reported no appreciable build-up of carbon like the gen3.
There was a guy from the UK that had around 200K miles on his gen4 and the EGR valve got stuck open; which resulted in hesitations during acceleration. He admitted to not changing his coolant, but had to when replacing the valve assembly. It was crusty.

Thanks for all the replies, I'll have to research it more but you all gave me some things to think about, Sea Foam was rated 4.8 stars on Amazon, Techron is rated 4.7 stars, both good ratings, I have to weigh the difference in this instance between "if it's not broke don't fix it" and "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" to decide whether to use any additive or not.

Foot notes in the OEM manual states to run injection cleaner through to maximize mpg. Not sure if that was in the Canadian and/or US manual. We have fairly clean fuel with additives already mixed-in in the states, so don't know how valid that is.

I don't use fuel additives. I just exclusively use top tier gas, which already has greater amounts of detergent additives than non-top tier gas. It is generally around the same price as gas that isn't top tier. If you don't use top tier gas or you just want to go the extra mile, I second adding Techron or equivalent product with PEA (Polyether Amine) to a tank before each oil change. Because I get oil changes every 6-7 months (10,000 miles) and burn less than 20 gallons of gas a year, I feel this would be overkill for me.

How many hours on the motor?
How many miles on the vehicle?

I used Seafoam proactively on my 2006 GMC (215,000 miles) just the other day following a camshaft sensor glitch, but I suspect that for a new (2020) car with probably 1/10th the engine hours you 'may' not need to use it like I do.
I used it with an engine oil 'flush' and the result was that it was probably not that productive - although I would state in an open court that the vehicle 'seems' to be running 'better.'
I will be able to tell when I tabulate the vehicle's efficiency after the next tank fill.
What's your efficiency now, and did you notice any difference after the SF treatment?

Seafoam is like....$6 a can - so it "may" not be money wasted, and it's also likely that it will not hurt your car.
Props to the dealer for not trying to shank you for unnecessary maintenance, but I am a little curious as to why somebody with a 6-year-old car would use a dealer for routine maintenance.

I presume that (a) you've read the Warranty and Maintenance guide that came with your car and (b) you're still following it.

A visit to the dealer every 6 months seems somewhat excessive for a 6-year-old car.....but, reading your location info...I get it.
