From the first week I owned the car, it would sometimes lock me out from the driver's door. I had to go around to the passenger door and hit the unlock button. Or use the key. I had it into the dealer several times; always the same result: "We cant fix it if we can't replicate it." So I waited for a time when it happened nearly every time. I booked it in, but again, the same result. The idiot service man said he couldn't guarantee that I wouldn't have to pay for it. I think my next move is to go to a different dealer.
Are you saying the touch open/close on the driver's door doesn't work when this happens? A couple times now, I'd stop the car, futz around inside while it's stopped. When I got out and closed the door, I'm pretty sure I heard the single beep and it locked without me touching the handle. The touch open/close still worked though. I didn't think walkaway lock was available. I've heard walk towards unlock was, but not in the LE line. There might be something to be gleaned from the back of the manual about customizations-esp. the dealer type.
It has happened occasionally when the car is parked at home and off, but much more often, it happens when I leave the car on while I walk away for a bit. Lately, it seemed to be happening more often than not, so I booked a service appointment. As I said, it failed to happen in over an hour. As usual.
That’s the only way repairs can be made these days. Otherwise, it would be a search and rescue mission that no one is willing to pay for. You got a lemon, which is becoming more and more common with Toyota. Hopefully, it will start happening every time before it is out of warranty
Btw, telling you in advance that you might have to pay is now standard procedure. They have to do some diagnostics and run it by Toyota to get warranty approval. Should they get denied, so will you, but it is extremely unlikely
I believe that something is setting-off the touch lock sensor. Your XSE has touch lock sensor on both front doors; so both door sensors needs to be looked at. If it's wet out, even simple fog or haze could set-off those touch sensors. I believe you'll need to run techstream and watch the sensors toggle, because I don't believe that system will set any error codes in your car's ECU. Sorry, from a dealers perspective - No codes, no repairs, nothing to see here.....
