Same subject as elsewhere in my ramblings... but never exp'd this fault before on the 5G. Driving around, nothing at all amiss or even hinting at such, all morning. Then when on a crowded main drag here surrounded by other vehicles... car suddenly has faults in the Safety Suite, msgs appearing persistently on the dash. Didn't see all of them, but 'Lane Keep Assist disabled' and 'Cross-Traffic Alert disabled', and one more I think was for the collision-avoidance braking function -- all cycled on the dash, appearing again secs after clearing them (w/ the " ↰ " button). Were a minute from my destination (couldn't pull over in stopped traffic) and didn't see or feel any other functional deficit... so continued gently on and parked. Scrolling and trying different things in my capacity with the 'gear' Settings page in the dash didn't do anything, so turned the car off and went inside. Returning to the car... started & back onto the street -- so far so good, warnings went away. But saw on the dash, under the chevrons for the spacing used by the dynamic cruise control... were a green steering wheel icon -- and with a big flatbed truck ahead 2+ lengths away at a light, hard-braked to a near-stop -- f***ing glad no cars were behind me... situs reversed I'd have been hot. But then that also disappeared, and function returned to normal WITF is going on...? Dangerous for one... and defo unexpected. Any ideas what this could be? Jesus, has the car been hacked OTA? Seemed like it, being in traffic when it happened. Or did Toyota do an OTA update somehow, which then decided to bug whilst car were in motion, in traffic? Kind of unnerving, esp if someone can do this at will from another car Side note: Toyota Canada's implementing some rather sweeping changes to security and theft claims priority on several models, as new ones seem to be disappearing into thieve's hands rapidly there. If this turns out to be an OEM s/w-h/w vulnerability, wonder how related this is, to that reaction by the mfr.
This has potential for major litigation soon as the accident reports start coming in! For all we know the accidents are already happening? Below is some advice someone recently gave for other potential litigation opportunities for older model Prius... ANYONE OWNING A GEN5 DO THIS IF YOU EXPERIENCE THE SAME SYMPTOMS: How to Report: Call the Toyota Brand Engagement Center: * Phone: 1-800-331-4331 Hours: Mon–Fri 8 AM – 8 PM ET, Sat 9 AM – 7 PM ET. What to Say: "I am reporting a failure of the [Describe Problem] on my [Year] Prius." "I am requesting a formal Case Number for this issue." Goal: By getting a unique Case Number, you create a permanent record that Toyota Corporate must track. This is the only way to trigger a recall or a future reimbursement "Customer Support Program."
Thanks for the info, Camper -- will actually do this tmw morning, before my memory of events get too smeared by time (and my rusty mid-length memory). Scary -- and not heard of this fault at all on 5th-gens (try to follow Toyota and Lexus news via LSFT, a Lexus-centric YT channel, iinm from Canada). Here's the security flaw video where Toyota's finally admitting fault and making moves to address them:
The green steering wheel icon means that lane keeping was active. With the flatbed in front of you, under certain settings, the car would automatically brake to avoid a collision. Was there a beep and a red rectangular alert box popping up on the display where the speedo is? As for the other failures, I would suggest getting the battery checked or the codes read to see if there is anything stored in memory.
Same with the Subaru. If something is deemed off with one of the ADAS systems, it shuts them all off with warnings. Usually selves correct in a minute or two.
Got it, thanks fellas... good info Regardless, have called Toyota Brand Engagement Center and reported the fault -- again, thanks PriusCamper... Trollbait: have zero obstructions to sensors anywhere on the car (even use a mini-blower to venturi-suck out any water collected around them when washing / rinsing), and have gone 1.5y w/o anything like this fault. Doesn't mean anything if normal degradation's on that schedule tho Trollbait / Coocoocachoo: have not checked the state of the 12V battery myself since Nov (dealer checked at the 15K svc, no notes on it then). That makes sense, as would affect all sensors, as well as all memory for the systems that govern them. The autobraking really unnerved me... and even if everything else were temporary bugs... that got my attention enough to log it with Toyota. Should get an email from TBEC by next Tuesday or so w/ the case number. CSR was very polite and called back literally 10 mins after requesting it. Just needed name, ph#, confirmation of email, home addr, and VIN, which was reasonable. They've also alerted my dealer to the problem, so they'll be aware of the problem if need brought in to look at.
Wasn’t your car involved in a serious collision? These messages are probably because your radars and/or camera are no longer properly calibrated after the collision.
Has not hit any sensors, as none of the impact made it to the unibody (stayed isolated to the door). All sensors are in the bumper caps... so unless the unibody was bent (which prelim inspection via alignment rack says it isn't) the sensors won't be out of calibration. Remember I'd mentioned the alignment shop did not have to do any actual alignment, so charged me inspection fee only. So no reason to sully sensor alignment by touching them. Had they done an alignment, then all prox sensors would need re-cal. --- So an update on where this issue sits: TBEC reached out again, and provided a Case # to refer to either my purchasing Toyota dealership, or the Servco Lexus one across the street. Lexus dealer's usually not as busy, so since TBEC alerted both dealers of the details of my Case #, they're both prepared to do a diagnostic on the car to see if there're any clues as to why an unintended autobrake happened in traffic. Neither dealership has a spot to take me today... so have scheduled w/ Servco on Tues. Will report what they find then, if anything
But you never had this problem before your accident, did you? If that is the case, there is a very high chance that the accident knocked something out. G-forces and sudden changes in g-forces can break things even though there is no direct impact on them.
Nothing blocking sensors when it happened with the Subaru. The system just seemed to feel there was some error. It soon cleared itself, and all started working again. Other times it was just too much mist or fog in front of the windshield cameras(Eyesight doesn't have front radar). My point being that a slight glitch with one feature can result in the system shutting down the entire suite out of caution.
Think the best course of action's to have the dealer's diagnostic testing investigate for me. If there's any damage to say, a loom or something (electrical's the mothership of intermittent problems, take it from a 16-yr powersports mechanic ), then tests will confirm need for repair or replacement, may even be covered under warranty if no connection to the impact can be reasonably made. Oh btw: have noodled around some cement walls at different angles and distances, and all sensors seem to work, including illuminating mirror lamps when cars pass on left and right. Hasn't done anything wonky since that day crosses fingers
So an update. Not sure how much this'll be relevant save Maui Prius owners, but here goes... This AM visited the Servco Lexus dealership, to ask some questions about turnaround, etc. before dropping the car off. And good thing I had... Apparently, this Lexus dealer will not carry out warranty work on Toyotas. They have the capability to do so (as do their counnterparts on mainland ime -- if they don't now, that's new to me), but flat refused to take my Prius for a diagnostic. Of course this confused me... so left respectfully and called TBEC again -- after all, it was their CSR who assured me both dealers would accept this TBEC case # for resolution. A bit of background... -- Toyota Hawai'i does things differently than any other Toyota dealer network in the country. They have their own rules for sales, service, and parts. Which is frustrating, using the website to buy a Toyota, then being referred to the Toyota HI website -- which may as well be as functional as a Y2K version. Can't find financing, can't see pricing... in HI (or at least in Maui County), we're all gonna haggle like it's 19-9-9 (don't you wanna go ). Try buying an AZ Prius, then send it to a HI state Toyota dealer for prep and delivery -- you can't, gotta physically go to mainland, buy it, take delivery, drive it to a port (L.A. or Seattle) and send it on your dime to HI. -- I prefer Servco dealers, since their service committment's far more legally and administratively upheld, than the indie Toyota dealer I bought the car from -- which is the only game in town (only 170K people on-island). They don't have to promise you anything... and usually things only get done, from the top down. My recent exp with them's been pretty good, so hopefully the horror stories from the past are where they belong, in the past... -- the svc volume of the Toyota dealer's crazy -- if I want to get anything done requiring more than routine maintenance (which this TBEC issue certainly is), a week if not two in future is the earliest it typically can be seen. I don't want to be driving a car that braked unintentionally from 30 - 0 with 2 - 3 car lengths to the car ahead very long, lest it happen again. I'd also like to get the car looked at before it gets the collision damage repaired, which is now scheduled for 03 Feb: 8 days away. --- Won't be too put out, if the car goes to bodyshop w/o being diagnosed -- can always do it afterwards. Just leery at what angles Toyota can lever then, saying they don't know what the bodyshop did, etc... so we won't cover this under warranty. But I'll be rather busy this business week trying anyway, I guess -- if can get it electrically vetted, then at least if it happens again there're be a paper trail. But until the dealer opens the ticket, to the mothership this is all hearsay So get this: after being turned away this AM... got home and called TBEC again. They said to call TBEC Hawai (wait -- wut...?i, ring this number. I do, and get another TBEC CSR, who says oh no, dial this number (same one I got them on) or maybe this one, and use these selections in the menu. Got a ringback msg. It is 2pm in the afternoon in Honolulu -- why. the. f***, is no one manning phones in for their state Brand Engagement Center, the only portal for customer outreach...? Because Toyota HI does things their way, and have done at least two generations. Obviously. Not amused
