I'm new here so I may not be posting in the right place, so forgive me if that is the case. I recently replaced the hybrid battery in my 2010 Prius (probably in 2023 or 24). The car had about 170,000 miles on it and was otherwise in good shape, so I sprung for the $4000 cost. Now the rear axle rusted through and a wheel broke off making it un-driveable. I also just bought 2 new tires for it in Jan/Feb 2026. How do I recoup some of the money I paid for these things? I'm sure there is a market for them. I'm in Pittsburgh, PA. Thanks.

You could go to a junk yard and purchase a rear axel assembly.
Someone has done that in the past year or so.... I can't seem to remember who it is though, sorry.

I'm sure someone will chime in and let you know so you can contact him and see what's involved.

$4000 hv battery is really expensive. The actual parts price now is running about $1600. So a used one would be way less than that

    Thats a low ball comment....

average cost for a new oem battery is floating around $3,400-3,600 NOT $1,600

factor in any tariffs and the price will stay up or go higher since gas is going up.

You can just google a Gen3 battery, G9510-76014. It's all over the internet at under $2000. Without you even trying to find the best deal. $1600 is a very realistic CURRENT PRICE

I agree with JC91006. You can get new hybrid battery for close to $2K (list is 2588). OP probably got it installed by the dealer, hence their price close to 4000. Depending upon how much of that warranty is left and how long has the battery been sitting, it may be worth between $1k and $2k. OP says it was replaced 2023-24. Did the car become stationary soon after that? If so, that's no good for the battery. If it's been sitting for a year or more, I would not even buy it for anything more than a junkyard price.

Without the battery chemistry make-up, this post is useless like the new headlight post photos with only side shots of the car posts we ve seen.

It's a dealer installed battery on a 3rd gen, so very obviously it is NiMH.

Thank you for all of the replies. I fear that my post and question may have not been clear. So to simplify: I have Prius that is no longer driveable and want to sell the hybrid battery, which is relatively new. It was installed in by a dealer in Jan of 2024 (2 years ago) and the car was driven regularly until about 10 days ago, so the battery hasn't been sitting around. I still have the paperwork from the dealership (the receipt with all the costs, so there's proof of the installation date). While it's helpful to know the cost of a used battery so I can compare that to what I'm offered, I'm mostly trying to find out WHERE TO SELL IT. Tried Hybrid Geek, but didn't get a response to my online inquiry. Called GreenTech Auto and left a message. I'd prefer to deal with someone locally if possible but will take other ideas. Thank you!

Gotcha. An axle repair should not cost you all that much. Is it really worth junking the car because of that? At the very least, I would get an estimate from a competent mechanic to fix that problem before you try to part out the car.

Thanks. I don’t want to junk the car but my mechanic said he won’t touch it when I asked what it would cost to fix. The car is in great shape, is 16 years old and has 180,000 miles on it but you’d never know to look at it. Plus I just bought two new tires in January. I think I will call around because I haven’t been able to find anyone who buys the batteries for any decent price. Greentec offered $50 and the places that pick up junk cars offered $1000-2000. Thanks for your input .

Seriously, find another mechanic to fix the axle. It's hardly a repair worth junking the car over. Get it fixed for about $1500 then you are good for another 180K. The rear axle is not even a part of the drive. It's just like any other FWD car.

Note: The toyota autoparts website often runs a 25% discount on parts. That would substantially reduce the part price. Or get it from Amayama like Mendel suggested.

Thanks so much, guys! I spoke with a Toyota dealer as a starting point and they estimated $2700 including labor, and if I can't find someone else to do it for a little less I may have them do it. Although I hate to put almost $3000 more into the car, I don't really want a car payment, higher insurance, and to waste the good parts of the car. Glad to hear that you all think it's worth it to put the money into it, even as old as it is. Is there anything else I should check out to be sure it's not ready to "go" and cost a fortune? Is it time for the transmission to go at 180K miles, or something like that?

$2700 is a good price. Last I heard it was $4000.
What would your car payment be? $500? For how many years? 10?
So in 3 1/2 months the brakes are paid for. No debt.

The transaxle will last longer than the rest of the car. The head gasket is the next to look for.
If you are changing the oil at 5000 miles, and have changed the engine coolant (and inverter coolant)
at 100,000 miles and 50,000 after that, and clean the egr system at 75,000, depending on if you are
    burning oil, you'll go longer.

Even if you have to pay to replace the head gasket, which is just like any other gas engine, it will
still be less than a new car.
