I saw $4.40 a week ago but, last night, was back down to $4.19.....strange to pay $30 to fill up my Prius!

But drove the gas guzzler today....Tundra. Will need the 4x4 for the predicted 10-inches of snow for our late-spring storm. (Not unusual for us, actually....we've seen 2 feet of snow in May before.)

But better a snowy mess than forest fires....thanking the Good Lord for the moisture here!!!

Holding so far at $6.099 for 89 -- hasn't budged in a few days. Little over $30 for 5 gals (half-tank on a 5G), but that 5 gals lasts almost 2 wks of daily driving. Love my Prius

 

Checking oil prices today one notices per barrel is once again below $100.

Don’t know about the OP but my EV doesn’t care as the solar roof fully covers the local miles. As for the food that is tilled, seeded, fertilized, insecticides, harvested, processed, and delivered by diesel vehicles … nothing really changed.

As for Ukraine, they developed their own military industries and weapons. They are becoming weapon system competitors to our often too expensive and unreliable suppliers.

Could Carter's degree of personal responsibility for the oil shock during his administration, and Trump's degree of personal responsibility for the oil shock during his administration, be intelligently compared?

 

Anybody that knows from doing their homework that Carter was by no means a saint, & yet even so, he could have given more support during the Muslim terrorist take over of the state of Iran. Being the pacifist that he was at all cost, he chose to let the country fold into what it is - modernly. Full credit to where it belongs. Even so, thanks for the support at all cost for the modern (what it's become) leftist's party. Many Muslims chose to flee Iran to the USA during that time. The irony is many of them still had a jihadist mentality, & over the decades their children as well.

Some of that is due to gasoline taxes, which in the US are generally a flat rate per gallon but in some states may include sales tax too. The EU sets a floor which each state must charge but they can go up from there. The rest is based on oil prices which in turn is a function of supply and demand with things like transport costs also figuring in. As for taxes:

federal: $0.184/gal
state: (varies) Alaska $0.09/gal to California $0.71/gal

The reason people are unhappy is not just that their gas prices went up (the taxes didn't change, other than the amount from sales taxes which scales with the base cost). People would accept high gas prices (for a while) if they were getting something in return. There are a lot of Americans who think that leaving iran to fester will result in them being in a position like North Korea, with nukes and ICBMs, but this time with a bunch of religious crazies with their finger on the button. (Arguably more the case in this administration too than any previous one. I don't recall a Sec. of Defense prior to Hegseth who actively argued for a crusade.) Anyway, Korea happened because every US government since the 1950's kicked that can down the road. Trump to his credit tried to do something about Iran - not very successfully though. The first time he declared that their nuclear program was destroyed (it wasn't, although some material may have been temporarily buried). This time what he did was so inept that it resulted in Iran closing the strait of Hormuz and significant damage to the world's oil supply (on the Arab side). When a big chunk of the oil supply goes poof the world economy responds with higher energy prices, and that percolates into everything else as inflation and possibly shortages. Estimates are it would take around a year to get oil back to normal from the moment the war completely resolved. Not holding my breath on that. Trump thinks that governments cease to exist when the top guy is removed (see Venezuela), but that isn't the case. The Iranian leaders who died have been or will be replaced. Iran lost a lot of military equipment. Clearly not enough if they can keep ships from moving in the strait though. Nukes off the table? Nope. In short, pretty much the clown show one would expect from this administration.

The best action to take is the correct action.
The second best action to take is any action, correct or not.
The worst action to take? No action. Which is exactly what has been done for decades, allowing the situation to get where it is.

I can live with where we're at, because rarely ever, is the perfect action taken, and if you wait around trying to plan for the perfect action, you may as well fall under the no action category.
