  • 343 * $3.00 = $1,029.00 :: pre-war gas cost per year
  • 343 * $4.50 = $1,543.50 :: Iran war gas cost per year
  • 1543.50 - 1029.00 = $514.50 extra from Iran war
• 12,000 / 4 = 3,000 kWh :: EV kWh per year
  • 3000 * 0.12 = $360 :: pre-war electricity cost per yer
  • 3000 * 0.12 = $360 :: Iran war electricity cost per year
  • $360 - $360 = $0.00 :: extra EV cost from Iran war

So with an efficient sedan, it would cost an extra $514.50 per year. But for EV vs gas savings, $1,543.50 - $360 = $1,183.50 which is some serious sofa cushion change.

The numbers aren't so clear in our case. We drive the Prius about 5K miles a year and average around 42 mpg (not very much highway driving, too many short trips). $6/gal * 5000 miles/year / 42 mpg = $714/year. We own the Prius free and clear, and don't own an EV. Could probably pick up a ten year old model 3 for around $20k to the seller, and then another $2k in sales tax to the state. $22k/$714/y ~= 31 y. So we would come out ahead in 31 years, assuming we add solar panels for other reasons before then so that "fuel" is free. Assume gas stays in that price range, probably not a safe assumption, but my crystal ball is pretty darn cloudy about the mean price of gasoline over a forward 3 decade span! At the end of that period ages would be: Prius 50, EV 41, us nearly 100. Basically, a race to the graveyard and the odds are high none of the three would make it to that goal line. Seems like the "safe" economic choice is to drive the Prius until it dies and then switch to a used EV, since the extra cost for the EV over a conventional or hybrid should be small (and could even be negative).

 

You could also get with in the free charging folks circle. One hardware store here had free charging as much as you want, one level 2 level 1 station. I was virtually the only one using level 1 for a few years. Late last year they turned it off. I imagine at 40 cent/ kwh it was about $40 plus per day cost to the store.
A Lowes has about 20 level 2’s at a store free but a bit far for me to bother. To do a Tesla it would need someone to drop the free charging addict off then pick them up with ten hours of charging. Some guys have bikes.
