I have a $10 magnetic compass mounted on top with double stick tape on my 2012 Prius v.

It's been there for 12 years and still works perfectly.

Complicated high tech is absolutely mindless

    Thanks.

I don’t think it’s magnetic interference and the circle thing did nothing. I’m liking Zone Settings as the culprit but haven’t found out how to set that.

I totally removed the dcm module and used the dongle. The car is a 26 le.

What year and trim is your car and does your in dash compass work right?

Going to try "diagnostic mode", posted by @KMO . Probably is just for infotainment.

    Quote:
Haven't tried it, but procedure from the EU service manuals is:
    ---
    1. Ensure that the vehicle is stopped.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn off the audio of the radio and display receiver assembly.
    4. Turn off the screen from the settings screen.
    5. Perform the "Flick from left to right" operation five times on the multi-display shown in the figure. [Figure just shows a long swipe]
      1. Tip: Performing flick operations may cause messages, etc. to appear on the screen, but disregard these and continue performing the flick operations.
    6. Flick the multi-display 5 times from right to left as shown in the illustration.
      1. Tip: Make sure to complete the operation within 15 seconds of performing the initial flick from left to right.
    7. When diagnosis starts, the service menu screen is displayed.

Tip: If diagnosis does not start due to a failed operation, turn the display on then off and perform the procedure from the start. (Only turning the audio of the radio and display receiver assembly from off to on is not a valid method)

    Ok, I did diagnostic mode.
    No gps location.
However, it still seems to be getting the time from gnss in the diagnostic mode.
Perhaps antenna going into DCM is involved, and signal is too weak for position fix, but strong enough for time.
I was able to put in the date in the diagnostic mode, but I see no place to set date manually in the General Settings-only time.
I also haven't found a screen where the date is actually displayed, although you can set the date format in General Settings.
And there is a DTC shown in diagnostic mode: B15DB87 , below.
HOWEVER, I did not check for DTC's before I took the DCM out. It is possible that the DTC was there because I explicitly opted out of the Toyota data collection thing when I first took delivery.
It would be interesting if someone who also denied the service gets this dtc in diagnostic mode.

I'm wondering if there is a way to block the didnal from going out from the DCM by covering the antenna with aluminum foil.

I will test to see if the compass works when I get the harness. I just ordered it so it might take some time. The carplay GPS is dead on and I never signed up for the Toyota online maps so was always greeted with the "toyota experience" start up page. I never used the compass on the dash, I always have it set to the MPG view so this is not something I would immediately notice. I have a radar detector that displays compass heading but I never really pay attention. It will be a good test to see if the radar detector aligns with the dash compass.

Per below, GNSS status is error.
I put the date in manually.
Perhaps it doesn't get the time from GNSS, even though it says it does.

edit: I don't know how the relative bearing (gyro?) is in the mix. Reset doesn't do anything, far as I can tell.

This is early on. At some point it got the time but not the date:

Not having a working compass is not a big deal.
    Still annoying, lol.

I dont think it is directly related to the DCM. I do not have the harness yet but I have the DCM unplugged as per my guide. I just went and tested. The compass is aligning to the radar detector compass. I drove all around to make sure but only captured the picture below. It was kind of hard because the refresh rate of the radar detector is lower so to get a shot that showed the compass heading took a bunch of rapid pictures.

Here's what the DTC screen looked like.
    Don't know what AVN means...audio/visuall?
Perhaps it wouldn't pick up any other DTCs other than infotainment/head unit.

It's a little hard tell: is EVERYTHING unplugged from the DCM?

I have everything unplugged from the DCM.Technically I left the three cables that are labeled WGB plugged in, but those three cables go to a single white connector that I unplugged and ziptied in my guide so there are NO wires connected to the DCM that are making connection to anything else in the car.

Ok do you have an iphone? if so, pair it and open apple maps and see if that resyncs it.This is not a prius but very similar. Also I tested with apple maps open. Maybe that is it.

No. I saw that video. I think it's for a higher end dash in a different car.
Yours is LE class, like mine I believe.

    It's weird.
Perhaps the gyro is in play.
My other theory is that even though it might not get its north direction from GNSS (gps), it might use the longitude to set the compass zone. Hey, it's a theory.
edit: Although a search just now indicates that compasses point to magnetic north in australia too, so there goes that theory.

    I don't get it.
If you drive around with a smart phone then why in the world are you worried about your CAR tracking you??? o_O

"tracking you" is not the immediate concern, although I run the phone in lockdown mode so the tracking is limited. It is the collection of your telemetry and selling it to insurance companies that is the concern. Also, there is a huge difference if it is coming directly from your car or from a phone. It becomes increasingly more difficult for the phone to determine if you are a passenger or the one driving.

Also you are making a pretty big assumption here that driving and having a smartphone are always mutually inclusive.

    AVN is the navigation unit.

I don't know why it's AVN. I might have known once. It's not just that they turned the letters NAV inside out. It stands for some actual thing ... but nav is what it means. :)

So how does the car know if it's the owner or someone else driving the car????o_O:cry::sick:

I'd be more concerned with the phone; especially if you perform banking transactions with it. Airline tickets and hotel reservation authorizes your entry; so they know it's you...........

Just saying; when it could be anyone driving your car - as you pointed out......

FWIW; phone "lock-down mode" isn't as secure as you think - because most basic functions stop working; if it's properly locked-down. If all your doing is using it as an old analog flip-phone - the nearest they can get to you is the tower your pinging off of.

    YMMV

Simple, it does not but in the case of your insurance company it will not matter. You have to disclose to the insurance company the authorized drivers which is attached to your name and the policy. The telemetrics of that car if given to the insurance company will impact your rates.

I guess you are also in support of red light and speed cameras while you are at it right?
