Yes but I can't remember what the standard EPS motor was. If the standard motor is not a brushless design, then it's basically an efficiency thing.

i think the point is can you change the inner tie rods .. i understand that Toyota dont sell the inner tie rods .. but can they be changed or are they intergrated in the rack ??? seems odd has any one got an old rack they could take apart to have a look then surely its just a case on getting the length and the screw diameter .....

Yes, the gen 3 trim that came with 17" wheels also came with a three-phase permanent-magnet steering motor, with a resolver in it, and a different steering ECU containing a small inverter/motor controller to drive the three phase windings of that motor, based on knowing right where the magnets are thanks to the resolver. Very much like MG1 and MG2 in the transmission, only lower voltage.

The other trims came with a basic brush-commutated motor and a steering ECU that puts out +− for "go left" and −+ for "go right". :)

That’s us. We first test drove a 15”, then a few days later a 17”. Steering on the former felt a little “clumsy”; the latter, which we bought, was planted, sure. Not just my imagination?

the increase in turning radius I could do without though, makes for more back-and-forth in tight parking lots, not my forte.

I already considered my gen 3 (with 15") a downgrade in that respect. My old gen 1 could turn around on my street. Need a 3-point turn with the gen 3. (n) The 17" trim is even worse? No envy here.
