I know there are other threads about disabling and modulating some of the many "safety" interventions on the gen5, and those have been quite helpful.

But one question that l could not immediately find in the manual: which of the alphabet soup "safety" interventions on the gen5 is the one that auto engages the parking brake when one tries to move the car a few feet while parking when the driver's door is not 100% fully closed? I would like to disable that auto braking action, but l am not sure under which umbrella that falls.

I thought the auto/pedestrian brake only kicked on over a certain speed, only dash warnings below that. I would suspect, if there was an actual auto-brake - it would be related to the open door.

    What do I know; since I own a gen4 which doesn't do either....o_O:)(n)

No, that would defeat the purpose of the auto brake. I've had a pedestrian walk up and stand right next to me while I was backing up and the car slammed on the brakes. I couldn't have been going more than 2 mph. I don't know which of Toyota's multitude of acronymed safety functions controls this feature.

Well that's inconvenient; so a lamp post or someone parked too close can lock you in and the car's safety systems won't let your attempt to exit the parking spot????? Cars in front and behind you parked too close so the system won't let you try to wiggle the car out of there??? More sensors, more problems - the nanny state.

I'm glad my gen4 doesn't do that - there's been a couple of times I had to rotate the wheel fully a half dozen times because idiots in front and back left less than 12 inches in front and in back. Luckily I always park 6-12 inches from the curb, so I can wiggle out.

Power poles and street lamps are usually on the inside edge of the sidewalk; but occasionally they are on the outside edge; because city/town planners didn't do their job when the street was widen and didn't want to delay the project, by waiting on the utility company or electrician to relocate and rewire everything.

    YMMV

I don't know how, but I've been able to squeeze into tight spots, albeit with the car screaming at me, without the brakes slamming on.

But anybody know what gen5 "safety" function auto engages the parking brake while moving the car for a few feet at 0.5 mph with the driver door not 100% fully closed?

I would love to find that function and disarm it.

Imagine if you're trying to get out of the way of an on coming train and someone who is also trying to get away from the train runs past your sensor and the car brakes and you can no longer get out of the way and the train hits your car and you die and your dad is a super successful trial lawyer. How much BS do you think Toyota will spew before they resort to a massive "unintended deceleration" settlement to end the lawsuit without having to admit fault so the millions in penalties can be a tax write off?

Or how about same scenario when you're surrounded by a group of people attacking your car and your "safety" feature makes it impossible to escape?

As in the reason why the promise of self-driving cars never became standard a decade ago is there's way too many situations that humans deal with that computers have yet to understand.

Those are the ultrasonic parking sensors, not the radars. It is called PKSB. You can disable them, but you risk damaging your bumper or hitting a small kid or animal.

So PKSB is the system that auto engages the parking brake when driving very, very slowly with the driver door barely ajar even when no obstacles are anywhere near the car?

I haven't had or needed them in my 50+ years of driving. Have never hit a kid or animal either. I don't count squirrels or really small critters that dart across the road. I can't really say that I killed them either, since I see them tumbling in the road in my rear-view. Safer to just plow over them than drive off into a ravine or oncoming traffic.o_O:whistle: Sorry to the tree huggers in advance.

Not the parking brake, the regular brake. If the sensors are too close to an object and/or the computer thinks you are on an imminent-collision path, it will brake suddenly with full force.

    Ah, ok.

So does anybody know what gen5 "safety" function auto engages the parking brake while moving the car for a few feet at 0.5 mph with the driver door not 100% fully closed but with zero obstacles near the car? Because I would love to find that function and disarm it.

Well; If the door is ajar - I would think the parking brakes would apply. So the car is still in gear???? Possibably disable the auto parking brake function?

The gen4 parking brake is manual.

It should be the same thing (PKSB). If it is applying the parking brake, it is also applying the regular brake first.

Yours don’t have the PKSB, as it is only on the Limited trim of Gen 4, like my 2021 Prius Prime Limited PHEV.

Can you clarify how you became sure that the parking brake is what's being engaged?

It is definitely the regular brake that is engaged, and I doubt the parking brake is also engaged, as there is no mention of it in the PKSB section of the Gen 5 manual.

Have you never hit the bumper of another car while you are parallel-parking?

Just went outside and disabled PKSB. Unfortunately, no change, even with PKSB off, the parking brake still kicks on if I try to move the car a few feet forward or a few feet backward if my door is ajar.
