How many more yrs of Gen 5 do you think there will be? Will Gen 6 introduce Toyota's new much longer lasting electric bat.?

This website is so cooked. Does anybody know if there's a plan in place for administrator succession?

Nobody knows. Anyone that gives you a firm answer is just guessing. There's even a real chance there never will be a gen6, or that North America won't get it if there is.

If I had to guess, I'd say the best chance is the early 2030s; maybe 2031 or 2032. We're barely at 3.5 years of full gen5 production right now, and we lost about a half year of that between the two rear door switch stop-sales. And then we factor in that the Prius is a fairly low production car these days. I just don't see Toyota dumping a bunch more money into Prius development anytime soon. Not with all the other models that need to be refreshed or introduced in the next few years; many of them much higher production models or high profile models like the new Celica or MR2.

That being said, I wouldn't be shocked if the gen5 Prius got the new battery tech at some point. From my understanding, the new battery is basically compatible with the current ones. So it's not like the whole powertrain needs to be changed to use it. It'll be like the transition was from NiMH to Li-Ion: some models/trims get it first, others later. And I suspect it will be less about the Prius and more about new battery production levels and the needs of other models in the Toyota/Lexus fleet. If the new battery tech is needed for the new Corolla or Sienna or some Lexus SUV or the upcoming sports cars, and production of the new batteries is limited while they scale up manufacturing, then I'd expect the Prius to be pretty low on the list for the upgrade.

At the end of the day, closely watch what Toyota does with the new Corolla in the US. Especially if they go hybrid-only in North America like the Camry, Sienna & RAV4. If they do that, the Prius's days might be numbered. The main reason North America doesn't get the hybrid Corolla hatchback(or the wagon) is because they're afraid of cannibalizing sales with the Prius(both being lower cost, car-based, 4-door hatchbacks). If Toyota finally brings the hybrid Corolla hatch to North America, it probably means the Prius is on the chopping block.

they usually last 6 years, so probably fall of '27? but I agree, a gen 6 is not a guarantee. toyota keeps their plans pretty close to the vest.
as for a new battery, technology, even though toyota has made some statements, that's even more up in the air.
mass manufacture of new tech is easier said than done, and if successful, how roll out will take place is anyones guess.

danny's kids aren't old enough to take over, so there could be a gap in service, unless he puts it up for sale and finds a buyer.

It will likely be a 2029 model year; you are looking at early 2029.

    Expected changes:
    • Super-lean burning engine with thermal efficiency around 50% or more, which will push the EPA fuel economy from around 55 mpg to around 65 mpg
    • Software-defined vehicle (SDV) built on the Arene platform, which will result in most vehicle features being updatable over the air
    • Likely TSS 5.0
    • All solid-state batteries are a maybe
    • BEV and hydrogen-combustion dual-fuel engine models
Note that solid-state batteries do not necessarily last longer than conventional lithium-ion batteries. In fact, durability is their biggest concern and has been delaying their commercialization. The solid-state electrolyte between the anode and cathode tends to separate during charge/discharge cycles.

The Prius sold better than half of Toyota's models in North America in 2025. It sold better than every other electrified car except the Camry (which is hybrid only).

I think it's unlikely that Toyota will prioritize temporary novelty cars like Celica/MR2 or niche models like the Venza/Mirai over their most iconic hybrid, especially in an era where gas prices are going up, battery tech is on the cusp of significant advances, and sporty yet practical EVs are popular. They have a huge opportunity to position Prius as something more, now that Camry/Rav4/Corolla hybrids are eating its lunch as the practical hybrids.

my brother in law just bought a new one. it only took him 22 years after I got my first one, to believe that they are a good car.

I think that's what finally convinced him. probably didn't like my dork mobiles. he was kind of forced into it as well, since he gave his Camry to his son, and now had to buy a hybrid Camry or the prius.
he's 75, and didn't have any problem with the low roofline, entry or exit, which is what turned me away.

The gen5 is doing better than the gen4, but the gen3 sold in the hundreds of thousands in the US. Sales had fallen to the point of the US getting the gen5 was in doubt. If not for the idea of a sporty revamp, Toyota themselves may have given up on the Prius. They had already chosen to go with the bZ/Beyond Zero moniker for EVs, and are now moving onto making ICE models EVs.

Depending on how production ramp up goes, the Prius might get to be the first model to get the new battery tech. Though the redesigned Corolla is the more likely model for that.

I mean it seems like a hard feat to outsell Corolla Hybrids, especially when we're talking about Prius getting replaced by it. Not just that, but Gen 5 Prius sales growth is outpacing Corolla, Camry, and most other Toyota models. The sporty revamp absolutely saved the Prius, and while it might have made sense to cancel it after Corolla/Camry/Rav4 hybrids ate Gen 4's lunch, it makes no sense today (IMO).

And yeah, the sales fell off a cliff this year, by about as much as Camry sales have increased. It's probably completely unrelated, but Camry is made in Kentucky and Prius is made in Japan.

Agreed. The Prius is a pioneer in the efficiency game and continues to be one step ahead of the competition. Tossing away decades of good will would be silly. Keeping the Prius (Latin for: to go before, first, original) as the embodiment of smart, cutting edge, (and now) exciting driving, seems beyond logical.

Car makers have developed and sold "halo cars" since forever. That may be the future of the Prius. A flagship vs. profit center.
