The MAYA'S have placed this date as the end of the calender 12.21.2012. The Maya civilization was known for the calender, zero, math, and astrology . I will be taken a long vacation to PERU. To bad I cant take my Prius with me.

The Mayans were brilliant astronomers, and were able to accurately predict celestial events thousands of years into the future. Would you care to enlighten us about the significance of this date?

Looks like an urban legend to me.

However, the Mesoamericans believed that the world was periodically destroyed and re-created. I don't know the specific Mayan beliefs. But the Aztecs divided the history of time into five epochs, called suns. Each time the Earth was destroyed and re-created. We are presently in the fifth sun. ("El quinto sol.")

The famous Aztec sun stone (often erroniously refered to as the calendar stone) contains symbolic representations of the four previous suns, and in the center is the present sun, Huitzilopochtli (I'm not positive of the spelling), and for his tongue, the ritual obsidian knife with which sacrificial victims (10,000 per year by the time of the conquest) had their hearts cut out.

I'm not concerned about any predictions for the future either the Maya or the Aztecs might have made. Plenty of people have predicted the end of the world.

Don't panic, it's not the end of time or the world as we know it. It's a symbolic rebirth in a way, like a new millennium. Predicted with astounding accuracy about 2300 years ago, 2012.12.21 marks a conjunction of the galactic equator, the ecliptic, and the sun at winter solstice. A party would be highly appropriate. :)

Providing they are still alive, I'll probably be visiting my parents.

That will probably be my last Christmas Holiday employed as I'll qualify for retirement at the end of that school year. Well, October, 2012 actually but I'll finish the year. And depending on the retirement packages that are being offered I'll either retire that year or take it one year at a time until I hit a golden handshake year.

Huh. I could be in Mexico, hanging out with some Mayan friends I have there (really! - in fact, that's where I'll be later this week. Except I probably won't see my Mayan friends because I won't be going to Oaxaca this time).

It will be Y2K, the rapture, and toilets will flow backwards. Good excuse to have a party (especially if it is on a Friday). You have to have something to look forward to. :p

Well, I did have a haircut appointment for that day, but if the world's ending -- I do not know. Do I do something more fun, or keep the appointment so I look good for the apocalypse?

Seeing as how you're our resident Mr. No Fun, I think I should explain he meant a party like in a bunch of people drinking and listening to music and generally having a good time (I assume you've read about them somewhere); not a political party.

Um, StevO...a couple of things. I'm sure Daniel's more fun in person than he comes across here. He jumps out of airplanes, swims with dolphins, and hiking in the mountains seems to be his favourite activity. And two, where did you ever get the idea I was a 'she'?

I've got no problem with that. We can drink orange juice and listen to Bach or Bob Marley or ragtime piano. What could be more fun than that? As long as the music is not so loud it makes conversation painful. :)

It's when we finally turn some middle eastern country into a glass
parking lot, and the entire rest of the world retaliates.

I'll be 61 years old. If we have a party, I'll bring the geritol and depends. I hope I am driving a Prius that gets 100+ miles per gallon by then. :p
