I've been e-mail bombing dealers all over my state and a few surrounding states to get a price for:

    a 2007 Prius Package 2.

This is the one of the quotes:
Price without tax, processing fee, tags in Virginia: $20,990.00
    OTD Price: $22,014.20

Is this a good deal? If not, how much more should I try to bomb out of em?
If so, what should I look out for in case the dealer is trying to fool me into buying something that has a problem or if the dealer is trying to trick me somehow??

What should I check when I arrive at the dealer's before I sign any contracts?

I think I should check the below things:
    Miles?
VIN record? (Any way to check this for free at the dealer?)

Anyone know what else to ask/check before I make a huge mistake with a crooked dealer?

Make sure you know what your quote includes. Find out the processing/documentation fee for the dealer as I've noticed that it can change from $160-$300. I believe it is $268 in Virginia. Also check if the dealer is including the carpeted floor mats ~$199 in the price. Most quotes I got did not include these until I called and asked(then they say they will throw them in for free). Even try to ask if they will throw in the carpeted mats AND the all weather mats. Doesn't hurt to ask if the dealership will provide you with free oil changes.

As to price I can give you a comparison to what I paid(2007 Pkg. #2) 3 weeks ago. Ignoring the tax credit your quote would be $400 cheaper then what I paid. With the $800 drop in tax credit you would be paying $400 more than me. If you just been getting email quotes, i would try personal phone conversations to get the price down a couple hundred. I have also read dealers are more willing to go cheaper the last weekend of the month.

Hope all this info helps. Good luck with your purchase.

    $21K for a pkg #2 is 1K below Edmunds.com INVOICE last I checked.
Doubt if you can "bomb" much better.

On 4/5/07 I paid $22,404 for a new 2007 package 2 with CF in a relatively small town (11,000 people) dealership in northern Illinois. That was a Thursday afternoon and the salesman told me it was the 15th. Prius they had sold that week! Dealer "documentation fee" was $58.48, plus tax (6.5%), title and plates ($168.00); out the door was $24,092.48.

Your price sounds really good. I agree that it doesn't hurt to ask for all weather mats in addition to CF and some oil changes - wish I would have! I think if they haven't said no-no-no several times you are not asking for enough!!

I love the new car! Getting right around 50 mpg on the first tank. Happy shopping!!

Here's my purchase in detail for a 2007 Prius #2:

    Service Contract 1830.00
    Less Trade In 400.00 (1997 Accord - 240,000 Miles)

    Cash Difference 24,590.57

    Dealer Fee 699.50
    Tire Fee 5.00
    Battery Fee 1.50
    Electronic Filing Fee 24.00

    Total Taxable Amount 25,320.57

    Plus State Tax 1,562.53
    Tag & Title 69.85
    FL Doc Stamps 87.85

    Total Charges 27040.80
    Less Down Payment 2000.00

    Unpaid Balance Due 25040.80 (Financed)

I think I received a pretty good price around $800 over invoice. I based this on edmunds.com invoice pricing. I also received the Toyo Guard Package, Window Tinting, and the LLumar Paint Protection Package all for free because they did not have the car that I was promised without those options so they had to give me one that had these options at no charge. Well it was the only #2 package left on the lot and it happened to have these options already on it. The paint protection retails for $699. Which seems really ridiculous, but the clear film (clear bra) they they put on is really easy to clean. The bugs just wipe off. The film is placed on the front bumper, half of the front hood, and side mirrors. You really cannot notice it on the car. In Florida, it's a great option for the Lovebugs, but $699 is a bit pricey. Maybe a local authorized LLumar rep. can do it cheaper?

Here's what I did. I negotiated everthing over the internet in a live chat session over a few days. I was totally serious about buying the car before the March 31st deadline so that I could get the most for the tax credit. I focused on one dealer because I knew what I wanted to pay. I assured him that I was not looking at any other dealer and that I would be there right away if they could get me the right price. At first, I was looking at the Prius #1. Then I went to this website and found out from other new buyers that I should be able to get the Prius #2 for the same price......25,000 OTD (out the door). After chatting for three days, they finally said come down. We can do it for you. Before that though, they tried several times to have me come in first before the price was negotiated, but I refused insisting that I was totally serious and that I wanted ALL negotiations complete prior to my arrival at the dealer. They said that their manager would be more likely to lower the price if I was there in person because I would appear as being a more serious buyer. Well, I stuck to my guns. They emailed me back in the end approving the price I asked for.

Just a couple of hints for when you are in the finance manager's office signing all of the paperwork. Be sure to refuse the option of SmartNote. This is a ripoff service that pays your car off early by paying a payment every other month instead of just one monthly payment. Depending on the term of the loan, it may knock a few months off of the loan. In order to sign up for the program, there is an application fee of $428.00 plus $1.95 (2 x per month) for each draft out of your account ($4 per month). They really don't like to mention this. So for around $600.00 you pay someone to take the money from your account every two weeks. What a rip off. I signed up for it not knowing that you could set up auto drafts loan payments for free directly through SETF's (Southeast Toyota Financing) website. I read the paperwork for SmartNote and cancelled it right away without penalty. You have to cancel within 3 days or there is a penalty.

I used Toyota's financing because it was 3.9% for 5 years. None of my credit unions could beat that rate.

I bought the extended warranty for $1800 for 100,000 miles just because it is a Hybrid and it could be pricey to repair. Just personal preference.

I declined LOJACK and the GAP coverage. I just think its another way for them to make alot of money for something that is rarely ever used. Again, a personal decision that everyone has to make. I think combined this was another $1500.

One last thing, you should consider buying a Prius with leather. I have had my car for about 6 weeks. I have seen more durable upholstery in other cars. It seems that the upholstery in this car is not too durable and quite thin. I can either spend another $1,100 to have leather installed now or just buy seat covers. I think I will do the ladder.

Well, I hope this was helpful. I tried to be as detailed with my pricing as possible so that you could compare "apples to apples."

Good luck. Would love to hear how you made out...........

    I WAS DUPED.

dealer said one price. when i came in they changed 180. so beware.

most of times, they tell u something just to sck u into coming in.

however, i needed a new car that same day so i ended up buying it. i was in a life and death situation so i had to. but, just beware of dealer tactics to sck u in.

    good luck.

Wow, from your story, it seems that some of the dealers in your area are really evil. Heres a tip next time: print out the e-mails that you get and ASK to talk to the person that wrote you the e-mail when you go to the dealer.

Anyway, I ended up buying the prius.
    2007 New Prius Package #2

    $20,790 before taxes/tags/processing fee
sales tax (3%): $632.37 (yearly property tax is gonna eat me though)

    processing fee: $289
    Dealer's business tax: $35.36
    Title: $10
    Plates: $43
    temp plates: $2
    NO to service contract.
    NO to extended warrenty.

    I got mine at:
    Koons Tysons Toyota
    8610 Leesburg Pike
    Vienna, VA 22182

Ask for Sunny Pak, never hesitated to beat prices, real friendly and responsive to e-mails too (perfect for internet buyers like me).

    Also, I forgot to mention:
It came with floor/cargo mats, the first aid kit, cargo net, and the cargo cover.

You can probably get it for ~$200 cheaper if you try going to Maryland (I never visited them because it was so far away, so no guarantees on any dealer tricks...):
    DARCARS Toyota
    12210 Cherry Hill Road
    Silver Spring, MD 20904

Recent dealer advertisements in the L.A. Times indicated $19,999.00 for package #2 - You should easily be able to get a minimum of $2,500.00 off the manufacturers sticker whether you purchase any package. I have seen as high as $3,500.00 off sticker from a dealer Moss Brothers (Moreno Valley, CA).

I have been shopping on the internet for a Prius and got a quote from one dealer of 22,800 for the Prius w/pkg2 and the extra mile pkg (emailed me). I then called another dealer and asked if he could beat that price and he said, "Send me his quote and I'll match it less doc fees." I tried to forward the 1st dealers email but it arrived as a blank page. (I think some computer geek fixed it to where the wuote couldn't be forwarded) So, I took a picture of it and forwarded the picture and the dealer said he'd do as agreed, 22,800 out the door, no doc fees. I'm supposed to buy today but if I find a better deal elsewhere, I'll go there. I've always said, "If you don't watch your money, someone else will." You have to be as sneaky as the folks at the dealer!

You can probably do a thousand better, depending on the delivery charge. I'd keep calling dealers up and asking if they can beat a price.

Try forwarding the above quote that I got (reverse calculate the taxes and stuff)

I am looking at package #2 or #3.

These different dealers don't talk the same language, A sales person goes to a manager, who is reading out of some log book. NONE of the numbers relate to the Sticker on the cars.

    They won't write anything down.

One dealer said no one is offering under invoice.

I have been trying to get them to break the price down.

    Car Cost

    Trade In

    Sales Tax

Doc fee - $599 in GA (which I don't want to pay) Also should you have to pay tax on this?
    Title Fee $23 for Georgia

I don't want any "extras" like Toyo Guard.

This is what I recommend for an apples to apples comparison:

Ask for the "out the door price", which should includ taxes, tax and all that other stuff.

right, MD tax is 5% :(

To add to that the fees of a VA dealer for MD tags seemed to result in a higher price, Sunny Pak gave me a base of 20790 and a final price of $22336...

ahhh, no wonder, the tax :(

Oh well, at least you'll be able to take the tax back when you get the tax credit...

This is my first post. I'm currently pricing a 2007 base Prius with Package #2 (HG). Invoice for the car is $20,419 and $575 for the package = $20,994, let's just call it $21k. My best dealer quote so far is $22,187 (plus tax, out the door). That's still some $1200 above invoice (but about $500 under MSRP). I'm willing to pay a max of $500 over invoice only - so $21,500 plus tax OTD. Wish me luck. Failing that we'll get a Mazda 5 for $4k less.
