We have had a number of instances where we inadvertantly crept up on someone without any warning in silent running mode. Although some Prius owners might get a kick out scaring the pants off a unsuspecting predestrian... we thing it more polite to use a more friendly approach.

Using the Prius horn is too loud and would startle the coolest of pedestrians.

Has anyone installed a lower volume warning device to supplement the Prius Horn like a bicycle bell that politely goes ring, ring?

We like the idea and would like to know if anyone has made such a modification.

    thanks, rj

Didn't find the videos, some of the links are dead.

I read through the translation and most seem to be electric bells.

I think it's easier to use either a bike bell or a horn. I like the bell with the tab you work with your thumb, but can't see any place to mount it that is practical and allows the leverage needed to operate the bell. Now a horn is easy. You can just roll down the window and squeeze the little rubber bulb. Kinda harks back to the real old car horns. I actually have both around the house somewhere. I have two horns and one bike bell.

How about rolling down your windows and put it in reverse? No - wait. That beep is too loud, keep your windows up :D

Hmm... How about mounting a bike bell on the rearview mirror stem? That's the only place I can think of that you can wrap a bike bell mounting strap around. (Definitely don't want the bell mounted anywhere on the steering wheel or signal light/wiper control levers).

The only problem is, not sure if anyone outside the car can hear it. :p

Well, we don't have bells on our bikes, so when my family goes bike riding on park trails and we pass pedestrians, we just yell out "On the left!". Maybe that would work with your Prius.

What you need is someone to take apart a bike bell and put in a little 12 volt motor. Then you would mount it out front and have a momentary on button on the dash.

Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe someone has installed one inside the passenger side door mirror. Using the mirror adjustment switch on the drivers door... maybe the movement of the mirror could trip the bell.

The bell mechanizm could be housed in the passenger side outside mirror housing creating, "The Prius Dingaling Mirror Modification". :)

We know it sounds foolish... but, life should be fun... and a little ding aling never hurt anyone.

Wolo Record-a-horn. You can program in any sounds you like. Corvette revving up, "Here I come", morse code, death-metal music, etc.

Install a 12VDC chime. I got one from Radio Shack (Part #273-071), and installed it just behind the grill. It's just loud enough to get a person's attention when stealthing. :p

Heres what you need to build for the prius, you could make $$$ off of a gadget like this..... ;)

Rotating warning bell Document Type and Number:United States Patent 6374767 Link to this page:http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6374767.html Abstract:A railroad car-warning bell is centrally mounted on the hub of a wheel.

Three opposed cylinder housings each contain a reciprocating ball which hits an end hammer to sound the bell when the wheel turns slowly up to speeds of nominally 15 mph. At higher speeds the balls are held against the end hammers, thereby automatically shutting off the bell to prevent noise pollution. The preferred embodiment has a single cylinder mounted along a diameter of the ringing bell. Three steel balls oscillate back and forth hitting a hammer at each end of the cylinder. A dampener may be used to adjust the ring of the bell.

subwoofer + volume cranked = problem solved.

I personally have a 12" in a ported box. That thing just kills. It may be a good solution for you though. As a bonus, I tend to get dirty looks along with my alerting of pedestrians. hahaha

^I honestly don't turn it up very often. I have my dog in the car with me a lot, and have it pretty much off around his ears. The only time I really like to turn it up is those late night drives on the highway...definitely helps stay awake!

You need to get or make a tape of one of those large Hemi engined dragsters idileing before it makes it run down the strip. It would let them know your driving behind them and also make them wonder where your hiding the engine!

Thanks for all the great suggestions... but, we think we have found our solution.

Walmart sells a Remote control multi tone door bell made by GE for under $20.00. The model number is
19208. The remote has a range of 150 feet. The chime unit takes 3 each "C" cell batteries. The Remote has a 12 volt miniture battery which comes with the unit. The user can select which annuciator they want to use by moving jumbers inside the unit. We selected the Westiminster Bells. After you set up the unit make sure you turn on the power switch.

Basically, the remote is in the car. Pushing the remote rings the electronic bell. We hope to mount the unit behind the grill.

Anybody know how to remove the grill?
    aloha, richard

We think we can mount in behind the grill.
