I tried to shoot a picture at dusk yesterday, but my aged digital camera won't focus unless the light is really bright.

That slot car layout picture *is* a bit of a tease, isn't it? I've been shooting the thing for an ongoing thread on a slot car enthusiast website, and happened to have it handy, is all...the construction has been going on for nearly a year!

Let me see if I can't take a few pics of the car today; adding that to the 'to do' list...

    --Natalie

P.S., car back from shop. Diagnosis: The "ear" on one of the very edges of the stamped-metal fuel tank really sticks out...my mechanic restored clearance. The job was free, but I gave him a bottle of wine as a thank you gift, just for being so prompt to take a look when I asked.

As long as you don't increase the scale too much and take over the entire living room, nobody will accuse you of being touched. ;)

It was that Brady Bunch episode, where Peter built the volcano, that really inspired me...
    :-o

Okay, sooooo...here are a few pictures. I will say that it looks to me like the cropping tends to make the tip seem larger than it already is; there's one shot in the series which, to my eye, puts it into better scale. Our cars have [ahem] pretty big butts, after all (not that there's anything wrong with that!)

It's looking a bit bling-y, perhaps, reposing in the dappled sunlight, but overall there aren't many angles where you can see where the exhaust pipe from the 'can' part transitions to the oval tip, which I think is good (I tried to capture one of these angles in the third picture down from the top). And, the 'can' part isn't normally that visible, itself, again, good.

Another small observation: the amount of black dust which accumulates on that horizontal surface of the bumper is no more than, perhaps even a bit less than the amount which accumulated before I had the muffler changed.

I built slot car tracks for years and I never thought of doing what you are doing. Great job and nice innovation. I play with big cars now, NASCAR Busch Series cars specifically, but the little ones will always have a big appeal to me... And, ignore the downers on your car project. Personalizing your car is the American way. We all do this. I've learned how to make all kinds of trick and performance parts and I'm always chopping and rebuilding something on one of my sets of wheels when I have time and money:)

    Hi Pinto Girl,
I would paint the case using hi-temp header paint. I don't like the looks of those chrome cans hanging down under the bumper either. Can you post a file with the new exhaust note?

Never mind, I just saw your installed pictures and your exhaust look great, very tasteful. Your muffler is tucked up and not intrusive, a very neat installation!

Thanks for posting the pictures -all of them. I like being able to see it from various angles. Car looks nice and clean too. Any issues re backing into parking stalls and possibly damaging the tip? How much lower is the new exhaust than the stock, if you know.
    Thanks again - nice job.

That would not attract the constabulary here. So I guess it's "legal". ;)

+1. After looking at the pictures, if Pinto Girl wanted to stay in 'stealth' mode, it should be possible to 're-cloak' by cutting off the oval tip. Then without getting on hands and knees and looking under the car, no one is the wiser about the modification.

Any feedback on impact on mileage? The S.F. Bay Area is on winter gas, so for a true comparison to past mileage (before the cat-back exhaust), there may be a requirement to wait until Spring.

Thanks again for the pictures. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a 1,000 words.

Oh, but for the purity of symbolic expression...

That's what we used to call tailfins and fake ram-air intakes, and dashboards reminiscent of the Flash Gordon Spaceflight Center....
    :)

The whiz-bang electric part of the HSD gets all the acclaim and the touchy-feely marketing, while it's the poor ICE which toils on, despite its obsolescent reputation. This, dear readers, is a chance to venerate the ICE and the the results of its labor!!
    [laughing]

Honestly, I just think I like how it looks. I washed the car for the first time (which, for me, has always been a bit of a sensual ---sensuous?--- experience)...and [ahem] the whole process felt pretty good. I got a chance to gaze upon that ovular tip, leading suggestively under the car...
    [sigh]

    What was I talking about...?
    Oh, yeah, the muffler....

I'd actually be willing to dyno it if I didn't have to drive far to do so...I'm assuming that a chassis dyno wouldn't care if I have those big heavy tires and wheels, or the stock ones, would it? That's a question mark for me.

Mileage-wise, I wasn't very smart about doing this and I added the tires and Touring wheels shortly before the pipe was installed, so there are one or two too many variables in the equation. I'm right back at my usual measly 39.6, which is where the car tends to be in Winter (this is only my second Winter, though).

If I had to guess, I'd say that the muffler does indeed add a bit of power, and might help mileage just a teeny-tiny bit, but not enough to offset the heavier wheels/tires. The ICE definitely does not need to wind out quite as much, and at WOT...I don't know if it's my imagination, but I could swear there's a bit less backpressure, too.

Overall, it's expensive, but nice. I really do like the sound at idle, as well as how it works when I'm driving.

I think exhaust is an area that's really easy to mess with, and easy to mess up, and the results can often be, well, vulgar. I also think this particular swap could have come out a LOT worse. I mean, we're talking about a performance muffler, designed, probably, by a testosterone-charged, "if a little is good, a lot is better, and too much is just enough"-thinking man or group of men...I was really fearful, as we all were. Our fears were (except for passing judgment on the exhaust tip, which is a deeply personal experience) unfounded.

The heavier wheels & tires (vs. OEM wheels & tires) will tend to under-state the hp & ft/lbs. One of the games that is played to enhance the dyno claims of a given mod is to test with lighter weight wheels & tires. If you are going to do a dyno, to be objective, you should put the OEM wheels & tires and exhaust on the car. Make a run with the OEM configuration. Then (with the car still strapped to the dyno to eliminate any variance due to attachment) replace the OEM exhaust with the TOM'S exhaust and make another run. That is the only way to get a true objective measure of the contribution of the exhaust.

Why are you being such a kill joy ?

There have always been starving people and war somewhere and it will always be this way.

Does this mean no one can ever be happy or excited or be joyful ? Is this somehow bad ?

If you are so upset about it why dont you do something concrete about it instead of just beinbg a killjoy

Re: The "fart can" has arrived!

For a dyno run, it may be OK to test another stock Prius to avoid having to change the exhaust. Minimize the work.

    1. Stock Prius with stock wheels/tires.

    2. PintoGirl's car as is, wheels/tires and exhaust.

    3. Swap wheels/tires and run the first two dyno tests again.

This gives us the net effect of the wheels/tires on the stock Prius.

It also gives the exhaust alone on PintoGirl's car with stock wheels

Caveat: Using a second car could introduce a variation between the ICE in the two cars.

Even without the Dyno, PintoGirl should drive someone's stock Prius to confirm her impressions of ICE power and RPM changes.

Does your exhaust come with a CARB sticker? Is it legal for use in California?

    Just wondering.

We seem to have lost our Pinto Girl without a trace on 7th of December 2007. Such a pity, I liked the way she thinks. Even her pictures went away, I hope she is OK?
Anyone have an email address to check on our Pinto Girl?

Really? Wow, I hope everything is cool.

Maybe the horse power gains from the new exhaust became so addicting, she ended up buying a Porsche!
