I almost never buy those extended warrantees. But I did on the Prius, not because it is a hybrid, but because of all the gizmos that are much more failure-prone (MFD, ABS, VSC, computer-controlled everything, etc). Now that my HID lamps are malfunctioning at 60K miles, I am REAL glad I bought it, since it will cover most or all of the cost to replace them (something like $1K per side).

Our MFD went out after the 36K mile part of the warranty went away. We have the extended warranty.
BOOM. It just paid for itself.
Prior to that, the ECU that controls SKS functions died.
BOOM. Now, we're about $1,000 ahead.
Just last week, one of the studs mounted in the front driver's hub failed / metal fatigued.
    BOOM. Another $110 ahead.

It's all a matter of odds, but for us? We are way ahead. We WILL be getting one for our SUV hybrid as well, in a few thousand more miles.

we just bought it because we can't afford an unexpected financial hit until probably 2010 thanks to the local hospitals. you all know that we'd fix anything up to and including complete powertrain replacement ourselves. but the parts cost scares us.

The other approach is to not buy overpriced options in the first place :_>

Perhaps, but only the HID lamps are optional on this product line. The rest are in ANY Prius.

Had to buy an extended warranty to keep the spouse happy. Have 107K+ miles on a 2004 with no problems, so I recommend not getting an EW.

    Maybe I'm a big sucker

This is my first post here (I joined just as Danny was modifying the software), and I wish I had discovered this forum (and this post) BEFORE I let the dealer hard sell me into getting a 100,000-mile platinum extended warranty on my new 2008 Prius.

But I shouldn't second-guess myself. The money would perhaps have been better spent on a nice CD (are they available in euros?), however I have a brutal commute (50 miles each way) and put 165,000 miles on my 4-wd Matrix in five years. During that time, I ended up with some pretty expensive repairs. As I expect to keep this car until I'm retired, I looked on the warranty as insurance.

BTW, I'm just learning about my Prius. I had my first chance to drive in an snow/ice storm this morning, and while I didn't feel like the Prius as as sure-footed as my old 4-wd Matrix, I'm impressed with the car. In cold weather, with a brand new vehicle, I seem to be getting about 40 mpg.

I'm hoping that will improve, but it's better than my old car -- and I bought this vehicle as much for its carbon footprint as for the gas mileage.

Welcome, Joe! I believe you can cancel the warranty you have with the dealership (I've heard of others here doing just that) and buy the $900 warranty from Troy. I came this close to buying the warranty in the finance office of the dealership but managed to hold out. I'm glad I did. I'm still weighing whether or not to get the warranty through Troy.

    Troy?

    Moxiequz:

As a newbie, I'm not familiar with Troy.

Is that one of those companies that sends out those strange and bogus-looking direct-mail letters warning that my warranty is about to expire?

    Please advise.

I'm at 35,200 and have submitted my quote request.

Is Warrantyshack.com and Troy one and the same?

Do I need to contact both for pricing?

    Hi Joe & Truffles,

Troy is Troy Dietrich of WarrantyShack.com/Toyota of Greenfield, MA. He and they are legitimate (it's a Toyota dealership). They sell the genuine Toyota Platinum Care 7 years/100,000 miles extended warranty for $990. They also sell lesser terms (fewer years/miles) versions of this warranty.

Before the software upgrade, we used to have a link to Troy/WarrantyShack/Toyota of Greenfield on the top of each page. Now you can find the link in the initial post of PriusChat's main Extended Warranty thread:

    http://priuschat.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2845&highlight=extended+warranty

For those of you who bought the extended warranty from your dealership at a much higher price, I believe you have up to 30 days to get a full refund, and thereafter you can get a pro rata refund. Contact your dealer directly to see about canceling that warranty, and contact Troy/WarrantyShack/Toyota of Greenfied to inquire about getting the warranty from them for less. Also, you have until 3 years/36,000 miles to elect to get the extended warranty.

    Good luck.

i'll add that Troy is a very nice guy to deal with, and we had no problems whatsoever with receiving the warranty paperwork in the exact time frame he mentioned.

i hope we never have to use it, but i'm glad to know we're protected through this rather vulnerable time period.

And if you are working with a dealer, DO NOT say "I can get the warranty for $990 from Toyota of Greenfield through PriusChat.com." Simply ask the dealer for his very best price, and if he doesn't come close enough, then thank him kindly and decline to purchase it.

BTW I don't know about buying it during new-car purchases, but when I bought mine from Troy I didn't have to pay any sales tax.

    Thanks, Boo et al

This info about Troy is great, especially since I'm located in Central Massachusetts, not all that far from Greenfield.

When we bought our Prius in 8/06, we took the dealer's Extended Warranty offer on a 7/75 policy. A bit later, we canceled the policy and then bought one from Troy for the savings. There was a $25 cancellation fee for doing this, but otherwise our cost for the dealer's extended warranty policy was refunded.

I can not find my own earlier reply, so I will re restate here.

We just bought a new 08 red Prius and the dealer 'sold' us a 7 year 100000 mile one wit a 100 deductible from not TOYOTA but Millennium (never heard of them). and I plan on canceling it. Anyone have any contact with Millennium here? When I get it canceled I plan on getting one from Troy.

Any help with Millennium will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Alan,

    Your original post is/was at:

    http://priuschat.com/forums/prius-main-forum/41796-extended-warranty.html#post545680

The way I read your request, you didn't ask for help locating Millennium, only if you could get another supplier.

My suggestion is that if you haven't received a warranty package yet, contact your dealer and find out Millennium's contact information (including their website address).

Thank you for the information on Millennium. I would like to know if anyone has the warranty from them also.
