    hi:

I am new here, I have a a question and wondering if anyone can help. I have a 05 prius (I bought it used) and I want to play mp3 disc that I burned in my prius. but my car's CD player cannot play mp3 files. anyway, I finally bought the 06 prius CD player from ebay and install it in my 05 prius and now I can play mp3 files in my car. However, the display console cannot display the file name and folder. Is there anyone know what else I need to do to fix this problem? Do I need to replace the 06 prius display console also? Thanks for all your help.

You can't. The 04 and 05 radios cannot support MP3 playback or it's interface at all.

    CD player MP3

Vagabond, I'm interested in the same info. I guess the disconnect here is that the orginal poster (as well as myself) thought the CD player and the radio are made together. The "power" switch and the hole for the disk are at the same place on the dash. If they are actually seperate pieces of equipment I didn't realize it. I've never looked behind the dash in the Prius, so I'm not sure "whats behind the curtain".

Is the MFD connected to a different "box" that is actually the radio?

    Thanks,
    Darryl

The problem here, from my limited understanding, is that the 04-05 MFD systems are mostly analog and don't support the digital protocols used by the 06+ MFD. You're looking at replacing a lot more of the car with 2006 parts before you get full functionality. I'm impressed that it even plays without issue.

I think I am also going to do what you did. Since it cannot display the MP3 file that is currently playing, are you able to move to the next track if you click the SEEK button on the radio? steering wheel?

It's the only avatar I would use when I'm on a car forum, unless I'm strictly there for DICE. ;)

You have to replace the Radio to get what you want.

Then you'll have to replace the screen since the old one won't talk to the new radios.

Of course, if you do that you'll have to replace the DVD player and Navi DVD.

And a few other bits and pieces.

You're looking at a bill of $3000+ for used parts.

I'm certain that he bought a 2nd 6-disc changer that goes in the cubby under the radio. They came in MP3 flavors in 06.

He should. The same commands for next and back are shared across all Toyota's.

OK, after I swap the 06 radio/CD player. everything is working. all buttons are working on the steering wheel and on the touch screen display console also. The problem is the display console cannot display file name of the mp3 files. and I think on 06 model, the display console has different control interface that allow you to control which files to play, however, in 05 model, it only support CD player operation, therefore, only forward and backward are available. what I want is try to change the display console display interface to make it more like 06 model so that I can control which files to play also. that is all. I believe the protocol between the radio/CD player for all prius since 04 are the same. Otherwise, I cannot control the radio/CD player through the display console and the steering wheel.

I don't know if you understand what I am talking about. I have replaced the radio already. and of course radio and the CD player are the same unit, I replaced that radio/CD player and I am able to do everything except to display the mp3 files name on the display console. I am guessing replacing the center display console will make that work. but I am not sure.

By the way, you do not have to scare me to replace everything. I have all the computer and electronic knowledge that I know what is making sense and what is not. don't tell me the bill is $3000 to scare me. unless I change it to JBL system, then I would believe that I need that much.

Ah - you didn't point out that you replaced the radio. I figured you went the easier route and added a MP3-enabled CD player.
You'll need to replace the screen, brain and amplifier. If you went to the JBL system you would need the amp that's spec'd for it.

In the subject it says there is a 2006 stereo/CD unit in a 2005 car. I still expect the user to experience issues as the entire system communicates with all digital signals in the 2006 but all analog signals in the 2004-5. You're looking at causing a lot of things to fail.

Is this 100% correct information about the 04-05 models having all analog signals while the 06 have digital signals? It does not make sense to me because it's EITHER the system will communicate or it will NOT. If the system is calling for ANALOG signals and you feed it DIGITAL signals such as from the 06 radio, then it will NOT work from the start.

Try feeding your aux in (analog) in your home stereo system with the optical digital output from a DVD system (Toslink or Coax). You won't experience issues in the future because it will NOT even begin to work right now.:D
