So I was trying to figure out why hess gas was cheaper. I was told that it was American gas and as a result doesnt have to travel as far so that cuts the cost.

However recently a friend of a friend told me they have seen a 2 mpg drop when using hess gas. Im not sure what kind of car he drives (probably not a prius) but I tried this theory out on my own mpg data.

I found that my milage is 1.3 mpg lower at hess then at all the other gas stations I go to combined. I dont have too much data to back this up however (19 fillups, 11 Hess, 8 other) so I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience with Hess specifically.

I've never avoided Hess like I've avoided 76 since I had one low-MPG tankfull.

It's mostly that BP is just fine and the two are similarly priced where they are near each other around here...

why do you choose BP then over Hess if they are similarly priced?

unfortuantely for me though there are no BP's in Boston

I use Hess gas almost exclusively and I get on average between 51 and 53 mpg. It is usually the cheapest in this area and I have no complaints about my mileage with it.:)

When I get BP gas, I see what the new sweepstakes is.

A few years back, they were running one where you picked up a scratch-off ticket and could win between $5 and $100 in gas cards instantly and they held a second-chance drawing for any cards not won that way. Since there was a no-purchase-required way to get the cards, I mailed in like 60 entries the first time and won like $260 in $5 gas cards (big stack) then the next year won only $120 or so since people had caught on that the second chance draw was a goldmine. Since then there's been no second-chance draw (BP noticed too many winners I guess) but I play when it's available (like about 60 days ago) and the gas is as good as I need...

Sourcing of gasoline is highly regional, so you can't draw conclusions on the same brand in different regions. Depending on the area, multiple brands may come from a single refinery.

The additive packages are generally brand-specific, though.

I never get gas at our local Rutters or Sheetz station, but I don't have any problems with BP, Mobil, or HESS gas stations. My favorite - Shell.;)

Sorry to bump an old thread, but this got me thinking.

My first tank (filled by the dealership, I assume) got over 52 mpg. My second tank which I filled at a Hess went down almost 1mpg even though I was doing better with pulse/glide. Could have been due to moving lots of furniture and boxes. Third tank was filled at another Hess. I didn't even break 50mpg this time. On my commute on Friday, I timed how long I was actually gliding. I definitely did a sustained glide for 1.5 miles and another for longer. My ride home is mostly downhill. When I checked the consumption screen, it showed I was getting 25-50 for those times I had my screen blacked out in a full glide.

I filled up at the Shell down the street. Slightly more money, but I'll find out soon if it's the gas and not the car or my driving.

The Shell MasterCard has a 5% rebate on Shell gas. Might cost a few cents more up front but you'll be hard pressed to find cheaper gas on a net basis.

    Thanks, I'll definitely consider that.

53.3 mpg with their gas now after what I consider to be the roughest day of the week of driving. :D

Many years ago, I drove around in a 1962 Austin Healy Sprite. I always got 36 MPG, tank after tank. When I started working at a Hess station, part-time after school, I started to use Hess gas. I figured since they checked the quality of the fuel frequently, it ought to be good stuff. My mileage dropped to 32 MPG after the first tank and stayed there for a couple more tanks until I went back to Texaco and other major brands. I also noticed a similar drop using Arco.

With my Prius, I noticed lackluster mileage using Chevron, Mobil & Texaco. When I went to Shell, my mileage went from 37 - 39 MPG to 42 - 44 MPG.

    Update:

Yesterday afternoon was filled with several short trips in hilly areas. Today, I made almost no effort to P & G due to traffic. I'm still at over 52mpg after 150 miles and I expect to hit 53 again tonight.

At this point I can conclude that Hess gasoline is just very poor.

I am biased toward Shell gas for one it is a top tier gas, and two i consider their additive packages one of the best in the business. I always see a drop in mpg if i don't use shell no matter the car i drive. Chevron is also another good top tier gas to use.

I don't believe Hess is considered top tier so their additive package is probably just enough to get by and satisfy the requirements of the law, so thus less additives means a dirtier engine which means lower mpg not to mention the higher wear and tear on engine itself.

I recently discovered, at least down here in Florida, that the more Ethanol in the gas results in lower gas mileage. I have a 2007 Prius and I noticed that my gas mileage has decreased drastically since the beginning of the summer. I talked to my friend who is a Chemist and a Prius lover, and he explained that to me.
Now, I am stuck because the only place that has NO ETHANOL in their fuel is Shell and is 20 miles away from my house. I guess we have to make some sacrifices.

I just thought I'd share that, I don't know if that has anything to do with your situation.

Here in Orlando area, my wife and I both drive Prius (and what IS the plural <grin>). She has a 2005, I have a 2006.

With the advent of the "May contain up to 10% ethanol", we've both seen a drop, between 5-10% of mileage. My wife (lighter foot) is better at it than I am...

Anyway, I keep waiting for someone to do an expose. Yes, gas prices are unprecedented - and folks don't even seen to notice they're filling up more often, so they're actually paying even more per mile.

Not sure, but I have seen a variance lately, that I'm guessing goes to shifting around in the % mix of ethanol. Maybe Hess is maxing it out? I haven't seen this being exceptional when I bought Hess gas, myself.

I don't know if it varies by region, but my friends have noticed this since I brought it up, as well. I'm at 52.8mpg on my tank of 200 miles. At this point, I was in the mid 40's with Hess and pulled it up to 48.something in the end. I'd try BP, Chevron, or Shell and just see if you do a little better. If not, then that's good! Hess always has the cheapest gas so if you're not getting a mileage hit then that's awesome. :)
