Ever wonder how the ICE shutdown sounds like from outside?

In order to document / educate / show off :D how quiet the Prius is, I mounted a camera with a GPS mount to create this video.

I was able to capture the quietness, smoothness as well as the hybrid feel pretty much. What I noticed while watching it back is the engine shutdown noise. I was amazed because the camera did not shake as the ICE shutdown nor comes on.

I heard some clank sound before and after the ICE shutdown which don't sound normal to me. It could be from some other external source. What do you think?

I only heard it once right near the end. Probably external. It was quiet. I heard dogs barking, jet aircraft, and other things, but barely the Prius ICE, and then only when you "goosed" it. ;)

Be aware, the ICE shuts down in one specific crankshaft position, and if it misses that position, will try again. I suspect this is why it sometimes seems rough. It keeps trying to get to the correct position. I've felt it try up to four times, but it usually gets there on the first try. It uses MG1 to move the crankshaft when it misses.

Oh, and you need a better lens shield. ;)

    Nice video.

Sorry to say it, but that just documents how noisy your camera microphone is ;)

I've seen/heard other Prii drive by and you can hear the inverter whining when they're braking, and hear their engine when they're gunning it. Cute idea, but coming from a film/video professional, the execution is a little off :D The real problem is that the car is mostly so quiet that you'd have to do some special sound mixing/editing and fake it to approximate the right sound level.

Also, you didn't come to a full and complete stop at that first stop sign. Maybe a cop will see this video and mail you a ticket :p

Not only did you not come to a full and complete stop at that first stop sign, your car sounds like an airplane, and you damned near hit the joggergal. ;)

I'd say you're a danger to yourself and everyone else! Are you sure the noise wasn't a baby carriage stuck up under the chassis? Maybe a roller-blade from an oncoming skater? :)

KIDDING!! I'm taking delivery on my 2008 Touring/#6 in two weeks (from a 2005 F-150 Styleside 4X4 FX4 OffRoad package. I love my truck but care and feeding of Big Oil and Weak Manufacturing is killing me! time to break the addiction.

    Thanks for the simulation.

I found where the tiny microphone is. I am going to put a tape over it to cover up the wind noise. I think it should work... When I try again, I'll make sure I come to a complete full stop. :D

Perhaps that clank was from that pickup truck turning left ahead of the Mustang?

Nice video although there's a lot of external noise. I think I only heard the engine once.

Hello all. Speaking of strange noises? I've got 2-Priuses (Pris), and here lately, my '05 makes a motor grumble sound, in spruts, when shutting down, and starting up. It is not the usual pump for the coolant I have listened to for years. My wife's '04 does not make the grumble/bearing going bad sound. I have isolated it to near the front driver's tire area. Normally, it is a low smooth motor sound for 3 to 4 seconds before the gas motor comes on, heard when first starting, and also immediately after shutting down. And then, in about 30 to 35 seconds, the pump sounds when shutting down. My guess, since it seems the gas motor never starts till after the grumbling stops, is that maybe it is an evaporative gas fume pump, purging gas fumes from the motor and/or gas tank. Is this possible? It could be the brake pump I've read about, but it makes the noise at start up and shut down, and seems to be related to the gas motor starting and stopping. It would not make the noise when I asked the Toyota mechanic. And he said if the car seems to run fine, then keep on driving. Ideas? Thanks.

Definately worth doing again, the first half of the video was dominated by the sound of the jet. I did like how you almost took out the jogger!
I'd suggest using a band-aid instead of just tap...try to dampen that wind noise a little more.

The jogger looked like she might be kinda cute. The video would have been cooler had you stopped to mack a little bit then got her number, hopped back in the Prius and stealthed off. :D

Nice video. Suggestion for your next attempt... How about a split screen or PIP of a second camera on the MFD showing the ICE turning on and off. Then maybe a couple of goodies like driving in pulse and glide, etc.
How about plugging in an external mic that is mounted under the hood in the engine compartment?

I could not hear the ICE starting or stopping on the video, but I have heard it in real life when I was walking, and a Prius came up to a stop sign and shut off its ICE as it approached, and then started again as it drove off. The actual sound was much lower than the background noise in your video, from the jet and the wind. It was barely perceptible in a very quiet neighborhood with no other cars around and no "wind in the microphone," since my ears are not a microphone.

Great suggestions. I will try again in the spring and hope to capture more hottie joggers. :)

I have two similar videos that I made afterI upgraded my bulbs to Philips Xtreme. I havn't post them because it was at night and I mounted camera tilted to the right slightly. I can post if anyone is interested.

For this winter though, I will mount the camera at the driver side to capture the traction control / wheel spin when I get a huge snow here in NY.

That's because you own a Prius and probably drive it everyday. ;)

This video is more suitable for those curious or researching about the Prius.
