It appears there are a couple of universities that can't "follow the rules". GM's agreement, when they allowed universities to accept disabled EV1's as research projects, essentially stated that they promise they will not put them back into an operational state:

    http://www.mindspring.com/~larry.paul/EV1_Pictures.html

There may actually be TWO EV1's that are up and running. Ahhh, those crazy, irresponsible, in-your-face college kids. GM's stance? Can you spell, "Cease-and-desist" ?? Will GM try and take back the EV1's from the universities? Maybe crush 'em? Here GM says that they are trying to re-invent the EV1 vis a vis the Volt ... and these crazy college students go and rub salt into GM's old wounds.

Think of the backlash that GM would get if they actually did try and step in. It would be the hottest thread on PC.

We're actually trying to verify the cease and desist claim before propagating the rumor.

The one thing we DO know is that GM has stated that these things should never again run on public roads. Hmmm. I wonder what logical reason they could offer for that?

    Logic?
Darell, now you're just being funny agan.:D You know how the GM clap trap goes: "It would not be safe ... GM might get sued if the EV1's were involved in an accident"

Logical? GM? Their real reason, the one they'd never put in to words would be that the EV-1 is antithetical to GM's very existence; that they only built it because they had to and once they didn't have to, they smote it out of existence as best they could. Another paradox from Generally Mediocre, that they did a great job building something that they hated. Unfortunately, the cars that they love they can't seem to build very well because they basically hate their customers and themselves. Self-loathing in Detroit.

That is SO cool! Yeah, the battery technology is just not there for a 'modern' EV. Right. All I can say is wow. How can anyone support GM for what they did...and what they still haven't learned. Volt? what a joke. EV1? brilliant and tragic...and not ready to die. Does this kind of thing even register in GM's camp? Does this do anything to get GM back on the (EV) wagon? The pessismist in me says no, due to the past history of the General.

Some but not all. More Rav4EVs exist than EV1s. Please just watch the movie Who Killed the Electric Car for details.

Do you think the person who made the movie had an ax to grind or was completely objective.

Ax to grind, or not... I tried to listen to the GM mouthpiece as to the reason why they took the decision they did, and it absolutely made no sense whatsoever.

If it looks like a duck and it quacks like a duck....

Malorn, I like your fictional car avatar. How much did GM put into advertising the EV1, in comparison to the fictional Volt ? I'd love to compare the ratio between the 2 advertising budgets. Do we DARE think how successful GM would be right now, if they had? ... in stead of laying off employees by the tens of 1,000's GM would rule the world. In stead of being ahead, now GM is spending MILLIONS on what ... P.R.
Your buddy, CEO Lutz just released the pathetic results of the fictional Volt Wind Testing. What'd he say? It's on par with a PARACHUTE? My God, you mean rather than develope a low drag coefficient car, they spend millions on P.R. ?? In stead of actually developing the fictional car ??
    Sigh,
Man, I gotta give it to you ... your loyalty is enexplicable. I'm no engineer, but I wonder why they didn't just use the EV1 molds and chassis, lengthened for a rear seat. Oh, wait, the four seater was the earlier version of the EV1, that they never followed up on. Never mind.

BTW, good authority has it that GM hasn't filed a ceasse-&-desist. That's because the universities haven't dared to put the EV1's back on the street. However, the agreement says that even public display is a no no. I'm sure GM would try and yank 'em if they DID find 'em on the road. Even so, man that would really be a hoot.

Ax to grind? He had a thousand chainsaws to sharpen! When I saw the movie, The thing that blew me away is that GM delivered a great car and set up a solid infrastructure to support it.....and then......

What's your opinion of the EV1?

Would the movie have been made if it were another GM turkey?

Have you seen the movie Malorn? It was pretty even handed. There was no quarter given to Toyota, Honda, Ford, the CAFE board, GM or any one else...even the public took a hit for their share in what happened.

No doubt GM took a greater beating than the rest, but I'd love to hear an explaination why they shouldn't have after you've seen the movie. Even Lutz, et al, admit to huge erros with the EV1 and how it was handled.

Please, see the movie before you fall blindly into your 'defend GM at all costs' mode.
