Yeah; I'm in agreement with the previous poster. In my experience, as soon as I deviate from its predetermined route, it recalculates a new route, and QUICKLY. You may need to wait until the car is sure you're OFF its calculated route (give it 30 meters or so and remember the snap-to), but it always works for me.

And one thing I love about this as compared to the Honda nav from the same model year is that it calculates alternate routes near-instantly. The Honda took up to 10 seconds.

The short answer is there is no such option as you describe. The NAV will recalculate the new best route, which sometimes includes doing a U-turn. Simply drive past it and it will recalculate again.

If it bothers you that much, you can try entering a detour (use voice command "detour") and it should skip all the U-turn stuff and find another way.

Of course, how frequently all this happens is very region-specific, so YMMV.:)

Thanks to all. I'll give the nav system a workout tomorrow and see how it handles change.

Do the aftermarket units work that way too? I am comparing Garmin and TomTom and want to know which one is best for quickly re-plotting a new route on the screen when you deviate from the suggested route.

The speed at which any GPS recalculates will vary depending on a variety of conditions, including storage media (DVD/Flash memory/SD Card), processor speed and of course your actual area and length of trip. IMHO, I find the Toyota NAV fairly quick for a DVD-based Nav, which has a considerably slower access time when compared to Flash memory, which more portable units use.

As to how different portables re-plot routes, this will vary depending on the software and your region, so I would leave that to owners of those models to comment, but again, since it will vary by region, it is very difficult to gauge.

I would venture to say that any current GPS on the market today does a more than adequate job at recalculating routes, just some slightly more desirable than others, from a subjective point of view anyway...

I have only had my Prius for a couple of weeks and I must say initially I was a little overwhelmed by the nav system. What has helped a great deal is reading through the commands list, and taking it a step at a time. I can say that it is getting easier and easier to use.
I love the full integration of the system and rely on the voice commands MOST of the time.
The screen is awesome and I LOVE all that the system does. My friends are really impressed with it! "68 degrees", "louder", "call Jim", "go to home"....it is a total 21st century experience.
    I love the Prius!

It's very easy to get spoiled by the Garmin GPS (I have an old Garmin, huge with an external stubby antenna, and I will not give it up!) , or the TOM TOM.
The Prius Nav unit does take a bit of getting use to, but with some time and frequent use it becomes easier.
