    Sales tax by state

I was surfing the internet wave and encountered this list. It shows the sales tax for our United States and I was pleasantly surprised (for lack of a better term) that Michigan's wasn't that high compared to a lot of others. If you live in Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire (don't forget to vote) and Oregon, you don't have a sales tax, stop gloating! But it seems that a lot of us are paying around 6%.

In MA it's 5%. If you can't eat it or wear it you pay a tax on it! Which is why a lot of people drive to NH to make major purchases. The last few years they have been having a "tax-free holiday" where the legislature picks one day or weekend and they waive all sales tax for purchases that day (within set limits - cars don't qualify). I really resent paying tax on toilet paper. I heard of one person that was so po'd about payng tax on pet food that he opened a can and started eating it.

We won't even go into the 5% meals tax.

locally we pay i think 2% on food items, and 6.75% (down from 7%) on everything else.

    wow, that 4% is misleading.

in wisconsin, we only had experience with one county that had a local sales tax. and iirc it was for lambeau field and was like an extra 0.5%.

none of this 2.75% local tax nonsense.

This list is fairly wrong. We in Long Island, NY are paying in between counties 8.25 to 8.75 %. Ha!

In Nevada the chart shows the state rate (6.5%); counties can add an additional percentage-usually 1/4 to 3/4%. We don't pay sales tax on food in stores; but do in restaurants.
I you think you would like living in a state with no sales tax; better check out their real estate taxes. It has to come from somewhere.

...and please don't forget to mention our extraordinarily high state income taxes in New York AND the really, really high property taxes on Long Island. After paying all of these taxes for the privilege of living on Long Island, one almost has to own a Prius to offset the high cost of living!

In Wisconsin (hello Galaxee!), it's 5 percent. In Milwaukee, there's an additional .5% county tax and .1% stadium tax, for a total of 5.6%. Other counties rates at:

    http://www.revenue.wi.gov/faqs/pcs/taxrates.html

Statewide, a flat 30.9 cents is added on to each gallon of gas in taxes.

But, in South Carolina the sales tax on cars is capped at $300. So its the same tax for a $14,000 econobox or a $75,000 lexus. The state 5% tax is not for auto's.:D

I just noticed that tax rate. We were up ice climbing just south of Wawa and was surprised at the tax rate when I paid the bill at the Mad Moose Lodge.

Alaska has no sales tax OR income tax. Who's footing their bill, then? Look in your mirror for the answer.

I thought it was the oil companies who were bribing Alaskans with cash?

My girlfriend pointed out recently that things purchased over the internet are not sales tax free.
You are supposed to declare those tax savings on your state return.

In California it varies by county.

If I buy my Prius in Santa Barbara County the sales tax will be 7.75%

If I buy it in Ventura County, 35 miles away, the tax will be 7.25% and I will save over $100.

Cities in Alaska have a city sales tax.

However, not only does Alaska not have a state income tax or state sales tax, they have the permanent fund which pays every resident a dividend every year.

    And, of course, property taxes.

I moved from Alaska in 2000...the dividend was almost $2000 per person at that time. A family of four received about $8K. I think the individual dividend was about $1600 last year.

The Permanent Fund is funded by royalties on pipeline oil. That is one reason Alaskan's support drilling on the North Slope.

A few "cities" have a sales tax. However, Anchorage, where nearly half the state population lives, does not have one. I moved here from Montana, where we also had no sales tax, but the lack of taxes in AK is astounding. I guess (depending where you live) "big bad oil" isn't so bad after all.

Wa State sales tax is listed at 6.5%....which is technically correct, however the city or county tax minimum that i know is 2% averages 2.3% so we actually pay about 8.8%

i dont know of any county or city in the state that does not charge sales tax
