I have a 2006 Prius. I am wondering what, by default is in the rear compartment of the Prius? I have found, what I believe, is a mounting bracket for a front license plate, but that's it, I think. Is there a spare tire somewhere?

What is supposed to be in the rear compartment?

    Thanks a lot.

The floor in the hatch opens (if you haven't gotten that far). Turn the round buttons at the rear of the floor to unlock it. Below that is a plastic tray to use for storage as you see fit. The tray pulls out to reveal the spare tire and jack.

All of which, BTW, should be described in the owner's manual. A great read when you have the time. ;) Actually not that great -- not particularly well written -- but a good source of info nonetheless.

There's a bin with the jack and stuff. Remove the black plastic bin and you'll find the spare tyre.

Sounds like you didn't get an Owners Manual. The 2006 should be the same as my 2007. Under the rear hatch (two knobs) is a plastic storage tray with several tools in the bottom indentations- tow eye, lug wrench, and jack handle. Remove the plastic tray with the tools in the bottom, and the spare tire (compact) and jack is under there. There should also be a storage compartment with a triangular lid on the left side of the rear hatch. Good luck, hope it's all there!

I havn't opened up back there to check the pressure in my spare for over a year, but watch out, there are some high voltage lines back there, I just can't remember where.
Those high voltage lines and ports (they may be red) are for the dealer serviceman, ne touche pas, s'il vous plait

If you get as far as the HV leads you have gone too far. There is no such problem accessing the spare tire.

The " dangerous high voltage lines" are well protected. You needn't worry. In fact, if you DID manage to puncture the loom and the cable insulation, you'd still find no voltage there, unless the car was ON. In that case, if you managed to connect to one side or the other of those lines, you would trip the ground fault breaker -inside- the battery metal box. I doubt very much you would get enough of a shock to cause harm. But it's always good to be careful. Electronics commandment #6 states "Beware of those who engage in intentional shocks, for they are surely non-believers, and are not long for this world."

The duplex receptacles in your house/apartment are much more dangerous.

If your car was supposed to come with a cargo net, and it wasn't installed by the dealer, you might find it in the cargo bin.

When you remove the cargo bin you can see the traction battery just ahead of where the bin was (behind the rear seat, bolted to the floor). On the right side, there is a triangular panel you can remove to see the 12V battery. As stated above, on the left side there is a triangular panel you can remove to access a smaller storage bin.

Note that if you remove the floor, you can pop out the cargo cover and store it on the large cargo bin - there are slots in each side to set it in, to allow the hatch floor (cargo bin lid) to lay flat. Very nicely done!

I suggest you do =). It's supposed to be stored at 60PSI. I checked it once after about a year or two and it dropped to 40 something!.

Also note when you guys replace the black plastic bin, make sure it sits in the slots closest to you (i.e. closer to the rear bumper than the rear seats). I've seen many showroom cars and other Priuses on display where the bin was just set into the cavity without the edge closest to the rear bumper hooked into the provided slot.

Hahaha... Yeah, well, English was not my forté in school. ;)

On a side note, I've noticed better mileage by removing the spare and jack. Extra weight that's not needed. Of course, my commute is in the city and not terribly far. If a tire runs flat, I'll just park the car and get a ride with someone to my house.

But note that the spare (while heavy and does help relieve some weight), does help balance the weight on the car. Now your car will be even more nose heavy.
