    Hey all,

Just drove an 08' base off of the lot. Weird, but true, the 08' Base does not come with a tonneau cover. Went to the parts department and the guy there said that it is not sold as an accessory rather as a special order part for, get this, $334. OUCH!

Any idea of where I can get a tonneau cover at a reasonable price? Maybe even make my own out of some sort of pull down window shade.

Hey, if you don't know, a tonneau cover is that thing that you pull out to cover all that junk you've got in your trunk!

Yes, keep checking eBay. Be flexible on your search terms as some people call them cargo cover, tonneau cover, cargo shade, etc. Sometimes I've seen more than 5 available on ebay at the same time. You should be able to get one for less than $100 including shipping. There's one available now with the bidding starting at $9.99. Here's a link to the 2 I think are available now:

prius cargo cover, Parts Accessories, eBay Motors items on eBay.com

Note: One think I'm not sure about is whether the mounting brackets are built in or are already on the Base Prius, or whether they come with the cover you buy off of ebay. I think you should inquire with any ebay seller. Also, be aware of the ebay seller's shipping charges.

    Good luck.

Just curious, where did you get your "base" model? Did they have many? Somebody else here was looking for one

Double check under the cargo area to see if it's stored there.

If not, any Prius cover on eBay will fit. '04 - '08.

And as was stated above, they're called various things so you'll have to do several searches. You should be able to do much better than $335.00

I just checked my 07 Prius. The mounting brackets for the tonneau cover look built-in or semi-built-in. But I don't know if your 08 Base Prius is the same. You should check it out. The brackets are plastic square indentations located right behind the rear driver side and rear passenger side plastic shoulder belt housings. The ends of the tonneau cover are square, and just drop into these square indentations.

I doubt it because the OP has an 08 "Base" Prius --- no tonneau cover, no pockets behind the front seats, no cruise control, no etc. In 08 Toyota structured the Prius differently. You can get a "Base" Prius without a tonneau cover, pockets behind the front seats, cruise control, etc. --- items that used to be on the prior years' standard Prius. But if you want any options at all, then those previously standard features come back in --- but you pay for them indirectly with higher prices for the different option packages, e.g., package #2 in prior years was around $1000, but package #2 in 08 is around $2000.

Yes, 08' Base has built in stuff in the trunk. Stuff is defined as: a spot for the cover and a place to hook it in when it is extended.

Also, we do not have cruise or seat pockets. Big deal. If anyone has ever been to Jersey, you know that there is almost never an opportunity to use cruise control, ever. My wife was convinced that she needed it, when I challenged her to think of the last time she used cruise in her civic, she couldn't.

Of the two eBay auctions, I'd go for the one that also includes the cargo mat.

    As an option:
Have your rear windows tinted with a medium (or darker) tint. That will obscure hatch contents from outside the car; of course, if you want to keep people inside the car from seeing the contents this won't work.

Also, tinted windows will help keep your car cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter and reduce glare. In addition, they add greatly to the appearance in my opinion.
