Uhm... Did I install the EBH correctly?

    Here are some pics:

    Here's why I'm unsure:

    1. It was too easy
    2. I could see the hole (ramps were pretty high - the back end almost touched the ground)
    3. It didn't "click" and it looks like it should have slid in another 1/4" or so

I haven't plugged it in yet, b/c I wanted to make sure it was in the right hole. I didn't find any other holes (me, or my buddy) so I put it in the one that it fit in... more or less.

Is that what it's supposed to look like?

Edit: Sorry for the crappy pics - they were taken w/my iPhone...

When you are under the car(feet sticking out the front), the hole is on the side/end of the engine(driver's side) up very near the exhaust manifold. The EBH will be parallel with the ground.

ah, man... where the hell did I put it? I put it on the right side (near the passenger).

If you are under the car, feet sticking out, you reach up and to the right, and that's where I put it - above the passenger boot...

using this picture as a reference:

the oil pan is to the right... and the picture says it's right that boot.... that's where I put it. But you're saying it goes on the the OTHER side of the car?

    Engine Block Heater.

Yes, it goes on the driver's side near the top of the engine just below the cylider head. I'll see if I can get a picture. The problem is that you can't actually see the hole for the EBH. It seems to me that Wayne(FireEngineer) found it by just feeling for it blindly. It probably helps that he has done a few hundred of them.

Hobbit does his installs by removing the cowling and installing it from in the engine bay from above.

Well I'm f*cking retarded. I can not find that hole at all. On the left side (driver's side) there is a piece of plastic that comes all the way down. There's no room for my hand to get in there. I'm so confused.

By the pictures that are posted in the how to thread - it looks like I'm in the right place, but from what I've read, it goes on the OTHER side...

I'm so frustrated right now.:mad:

I may have to go in from the top, or just give up altogether.

Here's a pic that helped me. The proper hole is circled in yellow. It is above the transaxle, in the space between the inverter and block. I too, installed mine from the top. Removing the cowl, you can see it and reach it, (not easily, but do-able).

Thanks. I am confused still on the orientation. If I am installing from the top (so let's say I am facing the car - passenger is left, driver is right), does the EBH slide in from left to right, or right to left?

Facing the car, it slides in driver side to passenger side. You can just see the hole from the top side, it is below the metal coolant pipe seen in the pic. Locate that pipe on your car and that should help orient you. That pipe faces toward the rear of the car. Look down between the engine and inverter assembly. Don't give up, once you see find it, it will be an 'AAAHHH, OK' moment.:)

Toward the rear/back side of the ICE (which is on the passenger side of the car) between the ICE and Inverter/MG2 you have to reach up to find the hole...it's a tight squeeze and you have to sort of twist your hand to get it in there.

I've found that laying with my legs coming out from under the car near the passenger door with my head just under the axle and then I reach up with my left hand...while I'd prefer to use my right arm it's just hard to find a way to get good leverage.

Be sure to see Hobbit's article with some good pix to help w/ orientation.

    Wow, I am retarded. :D

FINALLY GOT IT IN. I went in from the top, using Hobbit's write up. That one scared me a bit b/c of the amount of disembly. Once it was all taken apart, it STILL took me about 15 minutes of searching to get it.

Penelope is downstairs in the garage just awarmin' up right now.

Thanks, very much to everyone - as you can tell, I am NOT mechanically inclined.

Edit: BTW - start to absolute finish (locking the garage door) was 1 hour 20 minutes.

Congrats! You're going to find that it was well worth the effort. Do you have a timer for it? It seems that 3 hours is about the right amount of time to get it up to as hot as you can with the EBH. After ~3 hours, the engine doesn't warm up much more so the EBH is running at the rate of 400W/hour with little or no additional benefit. Happy warming!:)

Yes, I bought a digital timer w/7 days of multiple programming. Also has 2 outlets on it! I didn't bother to program anything this evening - I will program it later tonight after my wife and I head out for dinner...

Where did you find yours/how much? Mine is a mechanical one that is not entirely accurate and I can only set it in 1 hour increments. Also, I only have 1 outlet.

Shopped at Target, Wally, and then found it at Lowe's. I ONLY wanted digital. :D

It was 19.99 or 19.98. It's black, and has two outlets on the bottom of the unit. It it supposed to be an "outdoor" timer, but no biggie. It was located by the ceiling fans, w/the indoor timers.

Thanks! I may need to make a trip over to Lowe's. The timer I have is a little beat up. Here's a small tip: Don't forget to unplug before you leave.:D I have adapted a new technique to remind me to unplug. I take a loop of the cord and stick it under the wiper blade where I can see it before I take off.

Ah, glad to see you got it in.

I got my timer at Home Depot. I wanted a manual.

Next: pipe foam for grill blocking.

I just finished installing my EBH. I wouldn't have got it done without the install instructions on this forum and this thread really helped too. Wow
!, what a job. Once I finally found where it goes, I didn't think I'd ever get it in. And like putting grease on the thing makes it easier to hold on to! Not!

Thanks to all of you for the help.

from the bottom. I was afraid to take parts off. I probably set some kind of time record. I did it in a quick three hours!! But glad I have it installed. I don't know how much grease I had on the thing by the time I got it installed, but it seems to be working. I'll need it this week; it's supposed to be cold.
