Last week, I had my 15k oil change done early to try to clean up the last of the issues from my previous rodent-inspired dog food challenge. Although I'd planned on going to the other Toyota dealership in town, I went to the one I bought my Prius from... primarily for convenience, and partially because I was really hoping they were good enough for me after all.

Pulled in and told them 3.5 quarts, not 4. They made a note... even says so on the work ticket. So far, so good.

They mention that at 15k, I'll need a CAF change. Told 'em that's already been done... and having inspected it recently, I know it's still virginal.

After an hour, it's ready... and he mentions that they kindly dropped the tires to 35 all the way around for me. D'oh! Next time, I'll make sure to tell them to set them to 42/40.

I ask about the 3.5 quarts, and he tells me it was done. While I'm taking care of something, he double-checks with the tech, and tells me that the tech caught it and did it properly. So far, so good.

I get in the car. And yes, once again, they've put the little reminder sticky up there with a 3000 mile change interval. One of these days, I'll ask them why they don't follow the manufacturer's recommendations....

Drove to Toronto to see a customer (700 miles round trip :D), and finally this evening, had the opportunity and inclination to check what that oil level really was. Probably not smart, I know, but from what I've read in the posts here, 3.5 quarts should leave you midway between the "Fill" and "Full" lines on the dipstick.

Checking it twice, I find the oil right up to the full mark. This is with the ICE cold on a level surface.

So.... for those smarter than me, am I correct in assuming that this dealer can't count to 3.5?

In any case, my next oil change (in another 4000 miles) will definitely be at the other dealership... and probably all future maintenance as well. Hopefully, I'll have better results...

They "corrected" your tire pressure down to 35.

So they "corrected" your 3.5 request to 4 because they can't do 3.9.

I'm lucky in that my service department takes direction very well. I give them three quarts of oil and tell them to only use my oil and *I* will top it off at home. I also tell them 42/40 and no washing every time. It's on record but I remind them every time.

Your service department obviously think they know better and are 'correcting' your requests. They are having problems with the 'customer is always right' concept.

There's convenience and there's convenience. You might want to try someone a little less convenient before they really muck it up.

I think us Prius owners shouldn't be so anal about these little things. If it's at the full mark, don't worry about it. When the car arrives from the factory, the oil level is actually about 1/8th of an inch over the full mark. I think it was galaxee who mentioned that when the oil pump is operating, oil level is lowered than the level indicated on dipstick when car is not running. That explains why the oil level seems "over filled" from the factory when it's actually not. Toyota (note, I don't mean the dealer) made the car, they know how much oil should be put in it.

If you drain every drop of oil in the engine, 3.5qt probably gets you half way between full and empty. I doubt they do that at the dealership, so some old oil is still in the oil pan. That's why the level shows full.

    Hi dulecki,

3.5 quarts in my experience comes up to the full mark very closely. So, it sounds like the dealership got that correct.

If you fill the filter, install the filter without loosing any oil in it and then put in 3 quarts (total of about 3.2 quarts) in the engine - then the oil level will come up to at most 1/4 inch below the fill mark, probably a little lower.

I change my own oil. I put 3quarts & 20 ozs with a filter change. The level on the dip stick is dead on full. I check the oil level after 30 minutes of engine shut down.

I'd take Godiva's advice here. If they can't get the little stuff right when you specifically tell them about it, they may well get bigger stuff wrong also.

Example: one dealer had trouble remembering not to wash mine and not to screw with the tire pressures during an oil change. When I bought new tires from them I asked and was assured three times that yes, they knew how to use adhesive wheel balance weights. Imagine my pleasure when they drove the car up and I saw conventional lead weights hammered onto the alloy wheels. I got a free pair of new wheels out of that, and they don't get my business again.

After the dealer overfilled my oil on the 5k service, I have changed my own oil for the 10k and 15k intervals. 3.5 qts puts the level at approx 3/4 full, and I agree that 3 qts and 20 oz (3.625 qt) should be pretty close to full. I actually measure it out with a marked qt measuring cup since I buy Mobil 1 in a 5qt container.

Lets clear up one thing. If your oil level is at the full mark (where it should be) then they only put in 3.5 quarts. So, they did what you asked.

If they had put in 4 quarts, the level would have been higher than the full mark.

Ahh..wrong. 3.5 quarts with a new filter will put it exactly at the full mark where it belongs. Have read that here maybe 200 times. And whats so wrong with 35 lbs. Makes for real nice ride. I run 43-40 so I would just fill 'em back up with my handy $20 Sears portable tire inflator. Jeesh...lighten up.I wish I had your problems.
