The reason why you could not find an availability date is that it will never be available. The Zap-X, the Obvio, and a bunch of others are fantasies of the folks at Zap, intended to give a few pennies boost to their stock price. Zap has such a bad reputation that folks in the EV community were amazed when, after years of vaporware, they actually brought the Xebra to market. The third-generation Tesla (a family sedan, which will follow the second gen, a sporty sedan, which will follow the roadster) will be on the roads when the Zap-X has been quietly forgotten and replaced by the equally-nonexistant Zap-Y, the Zap-Z, and the Zap-Q.

Don't believe anything you read on the Zap web site. Not even the specs for the Xebra (a really fun but poorly-built car which needs significant upgrades to be acceptable to most people).

 

I think there could be. But it requires a tremendous amount of capital. Probably hundreds of millions of dollars to develop and bring it to market. And the companies with that kind of capital and the car distribution networks to distribute it have such enormous investments in oil, and are so dependent on revenue from maintenance, that they don't see a profit in electric cars, which get their energy from the grid and require very little maintenance.

If GM owned coal mining operations and coal-fired electric generating plants, Volts would be as numerous today as Priuses. But GM does not own coal. It owns petroleum. So it crushed the EV-1 once it had won its lawsuit against the CARB, and it only pretends that it intends to build the Volt.
