I haven't mastered the Forum on how to just post so I think I keep starting a new thread. Anyway, my Prius jerks me around when it switches from electric to gas etc. I can really feel it at the stop light when after a few moments of silence the gas engine kicks in. It kind of feels like something has bumped me from behind a little. Am I supposed to feel this when it shifts from engine to engine? I have only owned my 2005 for a couple of weeks now. Also, anyone know of floor mats that fit? I just had to take some back.

Sometimes the transition is smooth and sometimes it is just not. I'm sure someone here will be able to provide more details as to what causes it and when. But yeah, sometimes I feel it more.

About starting a new thread versus "just posting":
You should start a new thread if you are starting a new conversation. If you are continuing an existing conversation, you would click the [Post Reply] button that appears after the last post in that thread. Posting a new thought in an existing thread is akin to walking up to a group of people talking about the weather and blurting "my Prius is jerky when the engine kicks in." :D

In this case, you were correct to have started a new thread.

At a stoplight, I notice a small shudder when the gas engine kicks on, but it's not any worse than an engine starting in any other car, probably less so. Perhaps just more noticeable since I'm sitting there in silence. If the shudder is really bad it could be a loose motor mount.

Regarding the floormats, you could buy ExactMats for around $70 or get Rubbermaid mats at Target for around $20. The Rubbermaid are not exact, but are close enough for the price.

Nope, you did the reply just fine. Quoting someone is just fine.

This afternoon my wife and I went grocery shopping and had no problem keeping the frozen goods in the truck; it's 22 degrees here.

Try going down the the very bottom reply, and then look over the LEFT side, and see the button that says 'Post Reply'... that will give you a reply that isn't quoting someone.
Of course, quoting someone is nice, if you are giving a direct reply to what they said. :)

I'm no expert but I believe that it depends a lot on how warm the engine is as to how much shuddering you get when they switch or shut off. As mine warms up it can be a little rough but when I've been driving awhile and everything is up to temperature all of the transitions are not noticiable at all. Very smooth. Outside Temps will also have an effect.

I copied and pasted Daniel's post from another thread that seems to address this issue, which I also have felt. (sorry Daniel, I don't know how to quote from one thread to another):

"The engine of the Prius is never disengaged. At all times if the engine is running, 60% of the torque goes to MG2 and thus to the wheels. If there is anything preventing the car from moving (such as your foot on the brake) then instead of the car moving forward, MG1 will turn backwards. The car can intentionally spin MG1 backwards to prevent the engine from turning the wheels. But it sounds to me as though what's happening is that when the engine starts that torque is getting to the wheels before the car can react to counter-act it.

Others have reported feeling the same movement. I've never noticed it, though I do feel a bit of a shake sometimes when the engine starts or stops roughly."
