Notification re 60K maintenence - Wth?

    I usually get my every 5K service at a local lube center, oil change, tire rotation for $30, I take care of the filters myself. However, I just got the following from my Toyota dealer. Is there something special about 60K or is this BS?

    "Our records indicate your 2005 Prius may now be due for the following important service: 60,000-Mile Scheduled Maintenance $359.95. Your Prius was designed with many advanced technologies. Even small adjustments can be critical to proper maintenance. You can be assured Toyota trained technicians will perform all work. Routine service can help maintain performance, improve gas mileage and help increase future resale value."

    $359.95?? Whaaa??

    at 60,000 you need to:
    replace engine oil and filter, rotate tires, replace cabin air filter, replace engine air filter and inspect the following items:
    automatic transmission fluid, ball joints and dust covers, brake lines and hoses, brake linings/drums and brake pads/discs, differential oil, drive belts, drive shaft boots, engine and inverter coolant, engine valve clearence, exhaust pipes and mountings, fuel lines and connections, fuel tank band and fuel tank vapor vent system hoses, fuel tank cap gasket, radiator, condenser, and intercooler, steering gear box, steering linkage and boots

    and on dirty / dusty roads
    tighten nuts and bolts on chassis

    Yea, when they're recklessly claiming you 'need' to crack open the engine to check / adjust the timing belt at 60k it doesn't take much to rack up hundreds in 'inspections' ... needed or not. But as stated above, under the maintenance thread, you will find the list necessary to keep the car under warranty ~ versus going broke :p .

    Your Prius should have come with an official Maintenance Menu from Toyota. A lot of dealers want to pad their wallets by doing a lot of bogus and/or unnecessary servicing

    For example:

    -"lube" chassis. I've carefully searched all over my Prius and have yet to find a single zerk on the ball joints or tie rod ends. There is nothing to lube on the chassis

    - coolant flush. The coolant should be good to at least 100,000 miles

    - Transmission flush. Practically impossible to do on the Prius HSD system anyway. There is a drain plug and a fill plug. It probably is a good idea to service the Toyota WS fluid, shouldn't cost more than $90 to have done

    - Timing belt. There is a lifetime timing chain, there is no timing belt

    - Ignition timing. The Prius - like most new Toyota's - uses coil over plug ignition. I'm not even sure if it is possible to adjust the timing

    - differential oil. Shared with the HSD components. Thus serviced at the same time as the transaxle is drained and refilled. A vehicle like my FJ Cruiser has separate axles front and rear, the Prius does not

    - valve clearance. This is an "audible" inspection. It would actually be very pricey to adjust the clearance, you have to replace valvetrain parts.

    oddly enough the canadian maintenance schedule specify that the coolant be replaced at 60,000km...

    What gives? I asked Galaxee and she said it's possible that they use a different coolant up here and told me to get it changed the next time (and I probably will to keep my warranty). But what's the point if it says "Super Long Life Coolant, 160,000kms" when I'm changing it 100,000kms earlier?

    I think my Canadian Maintenance Menu suggests an engine and inverter coolant change at 64,000 km.

    I think it's just different intervals. Under the hood - bonnet - of my Prius and my FJ is a label that states the coolant is good to 160,000 km.

    AFAIK the US market Prius cars don't have a set change interval for the cvt. However, the Canadian Maintenance minder does suggest changing the cvt Type WS fluid at 96,000 km. Personally I think that is far too long, an initial change at 16,000 km is beneficial if my results are any indication
