as a surprise birthday present. I got it the day before his birthday. To make it a surprise, I put the puppy in the box and hid it in my closet. I must have not left enough air hold cause when I opened the box the next day for my kid, the puppy was barely breathing. Using an old wife's tale treatment to revive the dog, I put a few drops of gasoline under the puppy's tongue. IMMEDIATELY the dog stood up and ran and ran around the room. It started biting things and acting crazy. I didn't know what to do! After 10 minutes of this the puppy just plopped down and laid still. Motionless. Ugggh.

Sounds to me like the dog needs some food and water... imagine if you were locked up in a small box for a day without any!

BTW, have you ever tasted gasoline? i bet you'd go a bit crazy trying to get it out of your mouth too!

No you're supposed to ask if the dog died.

    Okay. It's a joke.

But I just don't think animal abuse is funny, and the story is set up to appear real. I guess I watch too much animal planet and see exactly how stupid and abusive some dog owners can be to see this as an obvious set up to a joke.

Bottom line. I didn't find it funny.

I think it works a lot better when you tell it verbally.

    FWIW:
    I watch animal planet too.

and the charities that I donate the most to are WWF and PETA.

ok, this has to be a joke...if not, you are the dumbest ****** person I know. Wth would you put a live animal in a box in a closet for a day? Adopt out your kids, you don't deserve them. You sound like you can hardly take care of yourself, let alone a Dependant.

I was kinda hoping it was a joke... but people do do dumb stuff to animals for no good reason (and i didn't *think* you'd be one of them).

I agree... bad jokes are clearly excuses for immediate dismissal... Although if he came up with a good one in the next 5 minutes i might forgive him

Sorry my mistake. I thought that the humor would translate on the forum. It didn't.

I must say, I just don't get it. Sure, the joke is tasteless (especially the setup), but some of the best jokes can be a bit tasteless. In my book, the humor/tastlessness ratio just isn't high enough; in the end you're left with a somewhat tasteless joke without any real payoff.

You are one sick jerk. Contributing to PETA and WWF doesn't mean you are necessarily an animal lover, although I laud for doing so. How can anyone but a sicko think this is humorous?

Right before I wrote this joke, I told it to a colleague(who has three dogs). She had a hearty laugh. I've told this joke to educated people, animal lovers, people who don't speak English well and I've always had a good response. It's "supposed" to be funny because it doesn't start off as a joke, but as some unfolding crazy horrific unbelievable story, but ends as a silly joke. Maybe all these people with different backgrounds are all sickos like me. I think the humor just doesn't come out well on this board. But I could be wrong. I apologize if it offended(which it obviously did), but honestly, my intention was to share some humor.

    Okay. Continue to berate away.

I think the problem is it doesn't translate well to a written form like the forum.

I've got plenty of funny jokes that just don't work because you can't see my face, hear my voice or see my gestures.

I think you would have had a less hostile response if you had told it in the third person, punchline and all instead of telling it in the first person and waiting for the response you expected; "Did the dog die?". Because you didn't get that as a response. After that there was no saving you.

I suppose I shouldn't have been so judgemental; animal cruelty gets me extremely upset, because I've seen it done as "funny".

When I've told the joke, I've never not been asked "Did it die?" It's just the natural response when the listener is hanging on your every word followed by the pause. So I naturally thought I was going to get the punchline out by the third post. Of course it didn't and fell flat on my face.

As someone who works in animal rescue and has had to rehab the animals that people have mistreated I find this post in very poor taste. I would like to request that the mods delete the entire post.

I'm really amazed by the hostility of the replies. Burritos has been posting on this board for a very long time and his character is well known: He's very left-wing, very opposed to any sort of cruelty, so much so that he sometimes lets his emotions interfere with his ability to debate. He sometimes posts questions intended to elicit emotional responses and is clearly regarded by the extreme right as a bit of a troll on such occasions. His debating style does not always come off as the highest level of reasoning, but he is not a stupid person.

It was completely obvious from the third line of his post that he was not relating a true story. Burritos is not a person to put a puppy in a box and hide it in a closet over night. I could not figure where he was going with the story, but anybody who took it on face value has not been paying attention.

As for the bad taste factor, most jokes are in bad taste. They insult the intelligence of some person or group of people, or they relate real or invented acts of cruelty. Maybe we need a new forum: Fred's House of Bad Taste Jokes.

I didn't think this was a particularly good joke, but I did laugh. As pointed out above, some jokes require verbal telling. Others work in written form. Some folks don't have the knack for telling jokes. I suspect that folks who already dislike Burritos would be more likely to credit him with being capable of doing the act described; and dog-lovers are more likely to be offended by a joke where you're supposed to laugh at the pain of a dog. More people are offended by animal cruelty than by cruelty to humans, though the human race provides plenty of both.
