First marketing people don't need to prove anything with data, all they have to do is convince an uninformed public to buy their product by any means necessary. It is up to engineers and scientist to prove things with data.

Second, you are correct that current generation diesels have more emissions than some hybrids. ( I say some because if I remember correctly, my TDI has about the same emissions as the Honda Insight.) What you also fail to do is compare diesels to conventional gasoline vehicles. My 2003 TDI is has less emissions than the gasoline version that I would have been able to buy in a non-CARB state and gets twice the mileage.

We will have to wait and see how the next generation US-Spec diesel test for emissions. You can't compare EU spec vehicles to US spec vehicles because the next tier of emission requirements won't go into effect in Europe until 2010. Until then you will not have emissions equipment to reduce NOx.

I support the development of both diesel and hybrid technology to reduce fuel consumption. In my mind they are both just first steps to replacing fossil fuels for transportation.

Sadly very true, although in this case I meant prove it to me if they want me to buy one

They don't need to prove it to you, you have a Hybrid and if you are happy with it will likely buy a Toyota hybrid to replace it. They need to convince non Toyota buyers.

Great work putting the numbers side by side. It really opens the eyes of the uninformed. I will be able to easily link them. Thanks!

The popularity of these types of clean technologies varies from region to region. In the United States, hybrid vehicles such as the Toyota Prius are the most popular of all clean car technologies.
