Just picked up my 08 Touring Pkg 3 last week and I'm loving every minute of it. One of the things that kinda bugs me though, is the "Map" button on the steering wheel.

It just seems silly to have a button that doesn't do anything except tell me that it doesn't do anything.

Has anyone figured out a way to remap this button to do something else. EV perhaps? Single button SAT? Backup camera? Anything that actually does something would set my mind at ease.

    Thanks in advance,

    David

You cant do it unless you want to do a lot of hacking, soldering, and possibly making your own circuit board. I wont go into details. Short answer is no.

I was afraid of that. Figured it couldn't hurt to ask though. Guess I'll just have to learn to live with it.

My Map button on my steering wheel switches my screen to the Navigation screen. Doesn't yours?

It does on mine, too, but that is because we have the Navigation option. He has package #3 which doesn't include Nav.

Well that makes sense. Lol. I would use it for the Nitrous solenoid!

But backup camera would be sweet. Where there is a will, there is a way.

It would make a great location for an EV button.

Maybe you can map it to a video generator the puts "Should have bought the NAV feature" on the screen when you press it. <smirk>

I've always thought that about the blank switch locations that manufacturers include but cover with a plastic plug. It just says "You were too cheap to get the option that should be located here"

Even the (US and Canadian) Prius with every option available still has two blank spots in the dash: one is the EV button that we don't get and the other is the Auto Park feature that we don't get.

I need to fill those two spots so I don't look like a cheap SOB. :D

We could take a page out of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: When you press the button the MFD could light up with: "Never push the red button!"

Maybe you can change the word "Map" to "Ejection Seat" or "Smoke Screen", or "Rockets" and see what your passengers say. Lol.

Along the lines of the Hitchhikers Guide I was actually thinking of making it bright red. Could lead to lots of fun on the highway....hehehe.

Off-topic : Huge fans of the book series. Too bad they slaughtered it in the movie. Typical Hollywood.

I'll see about looking it up in TIS tomorrow when I'm at work... I have a feeling that it might not be too horrible to splice into the system to get some kind of functionality out of the switch...

If this turns out to be true, you may just be my favorite PC'er of the month :D

Not that this really means much, but I would think you were super cool :)

Well this might save you some time.

From what I remember the buttons on the wheel use some kind of switching device that uses different resistance values for each button. So unless you can make your own interpreter that can hook into the wire harness you will have to do some direct soldering on the map button pad. It can be done but it requires a lot of work. Or it might not depending on your skill level. If I did not have NAV I would try to hack the thing myself.

Because the TIS system is meant for technicians to repair and debug, I think those resistances are listed for the up and pressed positions...
