Hi Everyone - My son-in-law has one of the older Prius' and would like to update his GPS system with the latest maps. Can anyone tell me how he would go about doing this. Can you buy a CD with the latest maps?

    Thanks for letting me know.

    Hi Don,

    welcome to PriusChat! :welcome:

You can get the DVD (not CD) from the dealer and it will cost a pretty penny (in the range of $200ish).

Get the info off of the one you have and stay with the same series. Like the 5th generation, I upgraded mine from U31 to U32. I got my new DVD off eBay for a lot less than the dealer, patience Grasshopper.

Does anyone ever purchase the previous year's version, e.g., buying 6.1 version once 7.1 comes out? If so, where do you buy? From individuals (Ebay?)?

Just curious. I can't see shelling out cash every year for a new version but wouldn't mind upgrading to a newer but less current version.

    Thanks.

Where is the Nav system DVD player located?

It's under the driver's seat. You will need to slide a cover out of the way and press the eject button to get the disc out.

    A couple of comments

    1. If the Prius is a 2004 or 2005, you'll need to get a DVD that's for a them. That's because there was a change in the resolution of the display. If it's 2006 or later, then you'll need a DVD for that resolution.
    2. If the Prius is a 2004 or 2005 there's a trick to override the NAV system so the passenger can operate it while the vehicle is in motion. An updated DVD, even if it's for a 2004 or 2005, takes that trick away.
And welcome to the chat. :D

I recently upgraded my nav DVD to 7.1, if anyone wants version 6.1 make me an offer. No reasonable offer will be refused.

Good point, can "old" 6.1s that have been upgraded to 7.1 be passed on to other owners that are running on 5.1 (for example).

I have a 2005 Prius and am so annoyed by the fact that I cannot do this. So what is the trick to override the NAV system so the passenger can operate it while in motion. Thanks in advance!

I was just quoted $1060 from my dealership to upgrade the nav map on my 2004 Prius. Maybe they do that so $250 sounds reasonable. I am freaking out!

That sounds more like the entire head unit at a discount. You only need the $199 Nav DVD. The replacement procedure is well documented and can be done yourself.
