Finally, an election year I can believe in! I was so grateful 7 years ago when election day came and I knew all the campaigning would be over. It was horrible to wake up the next morning and see that it wasn't over and wouldn't be over for who-knew-how-long? Diebold's error should make this a smooth election year, but I thought Obama was supposed to win?

I'm a bit surprised by The Onion's radical stance on elections being a sham. Of course I agree. I'm just surprised by the "story."

The Onion is always great. On the same page is a story about a man who spent 15 years in Argentina studying anteaters, wrote "the definitive book" on the subject, and says it was a horrid waste of his life.

    Cool.

Um, I thought the Onion was fictional?
I think they are violating our trust by reporting a true story like this.

Holy crap, there isn't a sentence in there that didn't come true in some way. It would be funny except its now a reality.

I guess that's what disturbed me about it. I couldn't quite put my finger in it. Thank you.

... but upon further reflection, the story is fictional: Diebold has not actually released the results of the election, and there's a very good chance they'll keep them secret until the polls close.

Well, they'll have to change the numbers now. Instead of 48% McCain will have to get 49% or 47%.

Can't be prophecy. That'd imply a deterministic world. No free will and all that. Of course, if Diebold's got it figured out then they really could annouce who's gonna win... but the world ain't a deterministic place... thankfully.

The point is that Diebold is not predicting the future. Diebold can rig the machines to produce the outcome its sponsors want. The programs are secret and there's no paper trail.

Yeah, but that's not true for the really important stuff. Like, PriceWaterhouseCoopers don't fudge the Oscars vote, do they? :(
