    Hi guys,

    Quick question...

The manual says to wait until you have at least 671 miles on your prius before driving a long time at a constant speed.

I'm only at 270m but really want to take a 300m (round trip!) road trip this weekend....

Did anyone else road trip before the 671m mark? Any long term effects you noticed?

    thanks!

I drove mine on a 520 mile trip each way for vacation when it only had about 300 miles total on it. I haven't noticed any long term or short term effect for that matter other then racking up about 3000 miles my first month.

That sounds like it's just a bit over 1000km.

Anyway, the trick is "... at a constant speed". The theory is that your engine is still breaking in, and driving at any single speed (in the Prius, any single constant load against the gas engine) will cause the break-in to happen at particular spots (e.g., on the valve cams etc).

The answer is pretty simple; you can do the distance, but don't use cruise control. If you can do it without angering fellow drivers, consider varying up and down 10mph as you do your trip.

I bought mine 200 miles from home and drove it back.

If you route has up and down hills, there should not be any problem. I would think that if you vary the RPM at least every 30 minutes or so, you will do a good job of breaking in the engine. If the road is completely level for more than 30 minutes, you can varry the speed 65 MPH for 1.2 hour, 55 for five to ten minutes then back to 65 for another 1/2 hour. If you get off the highway and run through some light ans stop signs looking for gas, food, it counts as varying your speed.

And 500 miles should be fine. Where in heaven did they come up with 671 miles could only be because it is a round number in Km.

yes, even our dealer recommended not to use the cruise control for that reason (for the first 6-700 miles).. Its a real breaking period, and with the CVT, its good to allow it to run the full range of rpms during that break in period. the miles will fly by, dont worry.

Owner's manual's not in front of me, but IIRC, you are not supposed to exceed 50 or 55 mph either.

Of course, it's all designed to keep your engine running for 200 or 300K, you don't have to follow it.;)

I just varied the speed during that period and if I was needing a constant speed on the freeway I would go fast for a couple of minutes then slow for a few. Also, I changed my oil at 1000 miles. I didn't change the filter, just drained out the oil and replaced it.
