Suddenly epic fuel economy??

    I made a drive last Saturday to SF, during which I experienced heavy rain and wind, and 39 MPG overall. I ran that tank down to one bar and filled it at Chevron with just over 10 gallons. I didn't think it could even get that low without stalling.

    Since the fill up, I've gone 166 miles before losing the first bar, and I'm at 419 miles with three bars left.

    Normally, I average about 48 MPG (since arriving in CA) and ~390 miles per tank.

    So, is the gas I bought just that good, or did driving through heavy rain and wind scrub the engine clean for more MPG?

    Thats odd, did you reciently cross over one of the "break in" spots?

    what is your MPG on the MFD for the current tank? It's possible you were able to put more gas in the tank in your last fill.

    When I lived on the West Coast I always got better gas mileage with Chevron Gas than any other fuel brand out there. That Techron additive is some really good stuff and engines love it. Here in the Midwest I get the best gas mileage with BP Gas if I use Kwik Trip or any other type of fuel at another station I get 1/3 less miles than when I fuel up with BP. There is a major difference between Tier 1 and Tier 2 and 3 gas.

    No Bill, the gas wasn't the factor the weather was. In our Northern California, the wind blows generally from the SW during bad stormy weather. So you were fighting a headwind going to SF and had the blessing of a tailwind on the way back. The same thing happened to me that day going to Merced from Modesto! To vastly improve freeway MPG, pic a big truck going the speed you like and follow safely "draft" behind. Just watch the distance to not get too close. The best is a tailwind and drafting behind a truck!

    And if his fill up didn't happen in the Bay Area and have the corresponding tail wind for that tank . . . maybe it's because we have had a week of warmer temperatures (in the 70's) and he did some different type of driving than he is use to. Long drives at slower speeds in warmer weather can equate to "epic" mileage.

    I too love the MPGs from tailgating a semi at the same time the wind is at your back. :)

    I commute from Lincoln (north of Sacramento) to Fairfield twice a week and this is exactly what I experience. Lower MPG on the way to Fairfield but better on the way back. I am aware of temperature differences between a morning commute and a 6pm return home but I often make this trip during the middle of the day as well and 80% of the time I have the same results. If there is any wind at all it is usually blowing against me on the way to work. :(

    Last night was an exception. I was at 55.2mpg on the trip to work and ended the return trip at 48.8. bleh!

    Ok, the dumb site will not allow me to edit my above post for a typo so i made a new post.

    The return milage was 54.8 not 48.8. :p

    The tank was both to and from SF, with a definite headwind going to SF and a crosswind on the return (I spent several hours in SF while the storm front moved in). The tank ended up lasting 461.4 miles and the car only took 7.79 gallons to fill it, leaving me with 59.1 MPG.

    Since the current tank appears to be average mileage once again, I'm going to guess the gas was 100% responsible for my great economy. I've gotten Chrvon gas here before, but it showed no noticable difference with the stuff I buy on base.

    During the trip, the car passed 24,500 miles and the MFD displayed 50.5 at the end. I routinely experince drastically different mileage when comparing the MFD to the miles/gallons.

    I wish the Chevron was closer to me, I'd fill up there again. For the record, it was the Chevron station on Arden Way in Sacramento, just east of the Galleria Mall.

    Well, since it's "for the record" . . . that would be many miles southwest of the Galleria Mall (in Roseville), or south across the street from the Arden Fair Mall. ;)

    If you are going to calculate your mileage off of just one fill-up, you are going to get widely differing numbers due to the irregularities caused by the gas tank bladder. If the bladder did prevent you from replacing just one gallon, your MPGs would have been back in the 52 MPG range.
    MPGs should be calculated over a several tank span.

    It could be one of those break-in spots. ;) Since I've passed my 5K mark, my mpg stays above 50 mpg (avg.) on the display even though it is still real cold here in the Mid-Atlantic.:eek:
