I'd forgotten how annoying that reverse beep is.

The 12v battery on my 2005 had been failing to hold a charge, so yesterday I replaced it with one of those Optima batteries that seems to be the most recommended here on PC. (Total cost: $75)

So tonight when my wife and I went out, I backed up and heard this really obnoxious beeping. It took a moment to realize what it was. With the battery disconnected, the reverse beep had come back. Man, it's horrible! It serves absolutely no practical purpose, it can't be heard from outside, behind the vehicle. It's sole purpose seems to be to annoy the driver and passengers. I sure hope Toyota has wised up and gotten rid of it in their latest models.

So now I have to search the forum for the reverse-beep-disable instructions and turn it off again. Damn!

Sorry, I just had to vent...

2007 still has it. I don't get the logic behind it at all. I have disconnected my 12V battery twice and so the first thing to do after reconnecting the battery is to shut off the reverse beep.

At least on the 08 models they got rid of the "I agree" for the factory NAV.

I don't mind it. I actually like it since it reminds me that I am "R" and not "D". :p

I notice that I'm in R when the car moves backwards when I press the go pedal. :caked:

Michgal - did you mean that in the political sense? I hope not.

I happen to have saved those reverse beep instructions, though I haven't gotten around to doing it yet for my new Prius. Here they are:

    REVERSE BEEP
To eliminate the beeps from seatbelts and reverse, follow these steps:

    1. Power on the car to IG-ON or READY. IG-ON will do for this purpose.
    2. Using the Trip/ODO button, set the Trip/ODO display to ODO (not Trip A or Trip B )
    3. Power off the car.
    4. Now power the car to READY (brake on). This is required so that step 6 works correctly.
    5. Within 6 seconds of powering on, press and hold the Trip/ODO button for 10 seconds or more (there is no indication... just count)
    6. WHILE STILL HOLDING ODO *after* the 10 seconds, shift the "gear" selector to R, then press the P button. Now release the Trip/ODO button.
    7. If the last step was successful, "b on" or "b off" should be displayed in the location where the Trip Odometer or Odometer is normally displayed (front dash area). "b on" is beep on (default), and "b off" is beep off.
    8. Press Trip/ODO to toggle the mode.
    9. Now power the car off to exit the toggle mode.
    10. Power the car on to READY and confirm the reverse beep status by shifting to R. The beep should not be audible if "b off" was selected, and should be audible if "b on" was selected..

Note: The Repair manual page states that if the the 12v battery is disconnected, the beep will reset to the default of on, and this procedure will need to be performed again - I have confirmed this to be true!. The repair manual also is not clear that Trip/ODO should remain depressed while shifting.

Additional Note: The driver and passenger seatbelt reminder chime can be disabled or enabled (respectively, defaults are driver on and passenger off) using similar steps. Instead of shifting from P to R to P in step 6, simply buckle then unbuckle the appropriate seatbelt while continuing to depress the Trip/ODO button. Might want a helper for this one!

Thanks sweetguy, I've printed your instructions and am going outside to do it right now, even tho' its dark outside. (I was going to wait until morning, but just the thought of that evil reverse-beep would probably keep awake all night)

Great, and you helped me too by confirming that it works. I'll do mine tomorrow.

I put extremely important documents like reverse beep instructions in the center console. I know I will need it again someday.

I really wish that I could turn that beep of in my car, but for some reason it's not possible to turn the beep off in the euro spec cars.

Okay, I'm confused. I looked at the link provided and it lists the cost of the battery as $160. How did you get it for $75?

    TIA,

At least you can turn it off. Not possible outside North America I believe.

    Paul,

Did you also have to reset the auto up/down on the driver's window?

The first thing I did when I got my Prius home a little over a year ago was to use a copy of the forum directions to turn the reverse beeper off. It is a very annoying thing.

It takes literally 45 seconds to disable the beep when following the directions. I am so glad someone figured this out because it was driving me nuts too. ;)

I've had my car a couple of months now and that stupid, annoying beep was the WORST! It's not enough that the back of the car is a bit challenging when you're backing (view wise) and then there is that beeping - totally distracting (and also now, totally disabled) :)

I keep the instructions for disabling traction control in the car, in case I ever get stuck in mud or snow. Never thought I'd need the reverse beep instructions again...

I'm sure I'll discover other things that got lost with the battery disconnect, like radio station presets, window controls etc., but I don't think there's anything else critical like the reverse beep, which is an indicator of all that is unholy and evil in the world.
