I'm very happy that my average is 46.9 after having traded in a car that was getting only 24 MPG. It is a remarkable improvement indeed! However, I am curious - is this a good average for my first four days? I am hoping that, upon getting more experience driving my Prius, that my MPG will go up from here. I guess I'm just wondering, how am I doing so far? Is that the norm for the first week?

I'm in Florida and it's winter, but it has been in the 40's at night this week and 65-75 during the day. No snow to contend with or anything.

You're getting great gas mileage. I have had my Prius for a month now and I average 39 MPG in 10 degree weather.

It's winter here in northern Indiana and I have been averaging 62.1 for the last 3 months.

It is pretty warm here and my computer says 44.9. You must be driving very slow. ;)

Good for you though. You obviously have a synergistic relationship with your Prius.

I live in the country and only drive in the city when I absolutely have to. Ialso want to be sure and say that my main reason for posting is to show what is possible with a Prius.

I haven't been going very slow. I've been going the speed limit or a little over. Lots of town driving (stoplights, etc.), with speed limit generally around 45. I'm glad to know I'm on the right track. I am a recovering speed demon, so this is a really good car for me. I get so excited about driving stealth, coasting, the display reading 99.0 MPG, etc. that I don't want to speed and mess it up. Been doing a lot of P&G or trying, at least. I hope I can get it up to over 60 - dang! That's amazing.

Stereo is soooo FINE. I love this car so much. I'll probably go to hell for loving a thing too much... :flame:

Well, good night. Thanks for the info.

Yep, i'm gonna need top fill up for the 1st time tomorrow!!! My display is showing 43.5MPG for @ 410 miles. I've had it since the 5th and have been doing 50% cautious(MPG) driving and 50% normal(gotta hurry up and get there) driving. I too hope my MPG improve, although I am pleased sooo far!!:D

I'd say your avg is good for your first tank. My first tank avg'd ~43mpg in January (GA). I was most pleased over my previous vehicles 18mpg avg. We had a warm spell in late Feb and I avg'd ~47 for a tank. With each coming month learning to drive the Pri and warmer weather coming soon I look forward to the tank where I avg 50'ish. If I don't no biggie though as it cost's $29 to fill the tank compared to my previous $65 tank and I drive about 100 miles further on my Prius tank. To me that's outstanding! :)

    Welcome Sam!

JAx is a good place to have a Prius: in-town traffic can be a bear an all the sitting around waiting to move burns no gas, and driving around the loop nets you some pretty decent mileage, too.

If you don't mind me asking, which 'burb you in? I used to be in Orange Cove and Middleburg... though that was like fifteen years ago; I'm sure a lot has changed since I was there last.

I'm on the Southside, intracoastal west, in the Kernan/Atlantic area, about 10 minutes from the beach. There is soooo much road construction right now on my side of town, as well as all up and down Butler and Beach Blvd. I keep hoping they will get finished, but they never do. I've been fantasizing a lot about moving to the country a lot lately. If only they hadn't decided to do every single road I drive on at the same time...if only... Still love my town, just pretty tired of orange.

As noted earlier, my Prius is a good car to have in city traffic, but even more so in the orange barrel kingdom.

Speaking of Orange Park, I'll be going through there today (visiting a friend in Green Cove Springs). It will be my longest trip in the Prius yet. It takes about 45 minutes to get there from here. I'll get to try it out highway driving.

    Thanks!

Oh, and you wouldn't BELIEVE how much Jax has changed in 15 years, especially since the Super Bowl. It is astounding!

I agree with the others that your early results are very respectable.

I'm glad Larry clarified his first post; it would be easy for a newbie to see his results and ask, "What am I doing wrong?" I also have been getting 60-65 MPG through the winter months, but he and I obsess about our fuel economy more than most. Don't expect that with normal driving. But part of the beauty of the Prius is that you can drive normally and blow away the results of most any car on the road. Keep doing what you're doing and look for 50+ when the weather warms.

Thanks! I may not get up to 60-70 MPG, but, with practice and a better familiarity with the car, my mileage will go up even more. Gonna go wash it now. :D

Also in JAX. Got 48.9 on my first tank graciously supplied by Coggins at the Avenues. Put the first tank of my own in after almost 485 miles! Only able to put 10.4 gallons in. SWEET!

Did drive the full length of the state (Jax to Miami to Orlando to Tampa to Jax) this week. Mileage fell a little on the highway - plus I wasn't holding back on MPH. I averaged 70+ most of the time. Got about 46mpg. But like you said - a heck of sight better than the 17 I got with my SUV! Total gas money laid out for the week - less than $75. That is what my old SUV cost to fill up once and I could only go 350 miles or so before it was hungry again!

Did have one hiccup on the trip (I posted as Newbie question - low on gas) that I hope some folks respond to.

I have loved my new Toy Car! Hope you continue to be as pleased as I am.

That's right... you guys have a football team now.

Heh... I remember the chaos when Tampa hosted their first Super Bowl: all the directional signs to the stadium were stolen for souvenirs almost as quickly as they were put up.

You'll likely notice better mileage on the smoother highways compared to the state roads, given the same speed.

I got mine from Coggin Toyota, too. Who was your sales guy? Mine was Brandon, who was very nice.

Congrats on your new Prius! I haven't had my first fill-up yet. I still have just under half a tank to go (360 miles on that, so far).

You wouldn't believe how interested people are when I tell them that I've bought this car. They have so many questions and many of them express an interested in buying one in the future. I have told them to check out this site if they want to learn about the Prius, noting what an excellent source of information it has been for me. I know, for example, that I would not have a 47 MPG average right now without all the tips and information provided by the folks here. Granted, I would probably still be pleased with an increase in gas mileage from that of my last car, but not totally thrilled like I am with my current results.

Thats very good. I hover around 46-49 usually in Clearwater, Fla. Now go pump up your tires to 44 front 40 rear & you'll probably hit 50 easily.

Can anyone give advice on how to coast with the prius so you use less gas?

I go up to 40 mph, let clear off the gas pedal, then quickly apply gentle pressure until the blue arrows disappear. You will then be gliding and not using any gas or electric. If you push too hard though and you get yellow arrows (which means battery usage) you need to back off the pedal again.

Tomorrow is week #2 and I am averaging 44.5 mpg with tank #2. I travel alot and am on the interstate more so then city driving. I first averaged 41.3 mpg so I am happy with the increase. My driving technique has definately changed too with this car. I am now trying to hypermile everytime I drive. I am braking her in slowly and enjoying the $27 buck fill up vs. the $65 buck fill up.
