Maybe, but where do the foreign-owned U.S. plants resource the jobs that you wanted the U.S. to keep? They employ Americans.

Consumer Reports, JD Power's reliability ratings along w/first hand experience certainly don't indicate this is true.

Either you're lying or you're very lucky or you're replacing parts that as part of "maintenance"/wear items which should really be counted as repairs.

Back in the Consumer Reports April 05 auto issue (p. 19), here was an interesting quote:
'We're also surprised at what some readers consider "reliable". Philip Saley of Del Mar, Calif., told us that his corvette was the most reliable car he'd owned in 40 years. Even so, he had replaced brake rotors, the muffler, and air-conditioner control, and a wheel bearing - all within the first 44,000 miles."

My former co-worker had need far more repairs (which had nothing to do w/maintenance) on his Chevy Envoy this is Honda Odyssey. The type of stuff we had problems w/on our 86 Olds Cutlass Ciera had nothing to do "taking care of it". We did regular maintenance yet we had things like:
    - steering wheel developed cracks at the spokes
    - glove compartment latch mechanism broke it would just flop open (had to tape it shut)
    - radio/speaker went bad so left front speaker just put out static
    - engine would knock on level ground even w/premium
    - engine would make grinding/gurgling sounds on hard acceleration
    - sun visors were crap and wouldn't stay up (same prob w/other GM cars we had)
    - car would make a high pitched squealing sound when you turned slightly to the left
    - transmission fluid ALWAYS leaked despite multiple attempts by the dealer to fix it under warranty (back then IIRC, the 3/36K powertrain warranty had a $100 deductive)
    - something in the engine broke (I was pretty young back then) causing the oil to mix w/the coolant, car nearly overheated [my uncle has the exact same model year and engine and had the same problem months earlier]

All this happened well short of 70K miles before the car hit 10 years. Then my dad go into an accident w/ it. On the other hand, our 91 Toyota Camry V6 at 90K miles had nowhere near this # of problems. My mom's 96 Camry V6 w/69K miles which she was driving until last month had almost 0 issues.

Your telling me that your complaining about cracks in the steering wheel or other small plastic parts breaking? Up here in the severe winters things like this break on any vehicle. It's a mechanical machine and eventually something is bound to break. GM's powertrain is VERY STRONG. Go take a good look under a prius with 50k miles and you probably will see some oil seepage coming out of the pan or valve cover gaskets. It's impossible to prevent stuff from leakning or breaking as age factor comes to play. My truck leaks oil all over the place. It's not because of GM's quality but just a pat of age. Almost 10 years old and 350,000 miles.

So, You want to talk about quality?

Now, I'm not bashing Toyota but they have there own issues right now and recalls as well.

You make it sound like your car will never develop a problem in the future. Eventually it will and you can't prevent it. You can delay it by doing preventative maintenence.

I live in San Jose, CA and that's where the Olds always had been. It was also garaged most of its life. We don't have harsh winters here. We get down to maybe 28 degrees F at the lowest. Winters range from ~30 F to 70 F. Right now, per weather.com, it's 73 F right now and the forecast is for a low of 47 F.

The transmission fluids leaks from the very beginning have nothing to do w/"harsh winters" either. No Japanese vehicle we've had ever had cracks in the steering wheel, the glove box break nor leak transmission fluid. I listed a whole bunch of problems which have nothing to do w/plastic parts.

Aha! See, you've indicated problems w/your vehicle ("leaks oil all over the place") yet earlier you claimed "My truck has 350,000 on it and I've only had to do the typical maintence on it." How many other problems have you and the other folks had which you don't count as "problems"?

GM's powertrains are so strong that our Olds developed the problems I mentioned, huh?

All cars require proper maintenance. The problems we've had w/American vehicles (mainly GM) have had nothing to do w/maintenance. Go look at the April auto issue of Consumer Reports and compare reliability across all GM products vs. say Toyota and Honda. You'll see exactly what I'm talking about. GM has a few reliable models, but the rest are very hit or miss.

Both power window motors and regulators failed on my Nissan 350Z and were replaced under factory warranty. Was it due to lack of maintenance? No. There's NOTHING to maintain here and it's well known and widespread problem on the 03 and 04 models.

Take a look at Consumer Reports 2007 Annual Car Reliability Survey highlights: Consumer Reports Cars Blog and the data I posted at http://priuschat.com/forums/prius-h...diesel-electric-hybrid-golf-3.html#post568050. Notice how many American vehicles are in the least reliable column and how few are in the most reliable?

Do you seriously think I'm gonna read some BS posted on Consumer Reports website? They are the most biased vehicle reviewer ever!

Guess where the components were made for that 350z especially your window regulators? Japan perhaps?

Yes, My truck does leak oil. I think I loose about a quart bewteen oil change intervals. But, It's 10 years old and 350,000 miles it's going to happen! But you know what? I bought a new 08 Silverado yesterday and I plan to keep both trucks. I will be pulling my oil pan off this week on the S-10 and replacing the gasket. Heck, Im gonna even replace the clutch and oil cooler lines. Quality is what has gotten my truck to this mile marker. But, It's gonna be retired to an off road truck in a year. I plan to lift it and modify it a bit for competition.

Every few cars might develop early problems and thats just the luck of the draw. Each vehicle is different and a machine might not properly tighten a bolt or miss something in the assembly line.

We have a few guys out at post that have Duramax Diesel Silverado's with 600,000 miles on them. Most diesels will see 1 million miles before needing a engine overhaul. Of course, It's different for cars powered with diesels as they typical only get 300,000 miles or so before a rebuild.

It's like I said before, All vehicles will develop issues as they get older but it seems you don't want to accept it.

So you're just going to stick your head in the sand, believe what you want to believe and look at data from statistically insufficient samples sizes? You might not think their reviews are worth anything but I at least trust them to report the statistics as reported to them by readers.

Yes, most likely they came from Japan. But I was illustrating that your claim about maintenance and repairs is bogus in many cases. All cars REQUIRE proper maintenance. Failures can happen regardless of whether this is done and some of these systems have no maintenance that can be performed.

Absolutely all vehicles will develop more issues as they get older. I never disputed that and Consumer Reports reliability ratings bear this out. You keep claiming I'm denying that.

As for the Prius issues you cite, mine is unaffected by all of them. All car makers have recalls, Toyota included. FWIW, the Prius currently has the HIGHEST reliability rating of ALL family cars in CR. I'm 100% confident that if you took reliability info for 100 Prius owners vs. 100 Chevy Impala V8 owners (has the 2nd lowest reliability rating for family cars) that you'd find that sum of Prius repairs would be a lot smaller than the sum of Impala repairs.

Jack66 is right, you are a troll.

Settle for shit because the salesman is a suck and you think we Toyota owners are stupid?:pound: Toyota don't need to offer discounts, their prices are realistic on the sticker not inflated to allow discounts.
Funniest post I have read this week. Do you think they treat you special because you were in the armed forces? If you had shown your cat owners club members card and asked for a discount you would likely have faired as well.

I am certainly beginning to think so, as his points have gradually shown to be the same as malorn's. And his debate style is the same, cherry pick information, ignore questions when convenient and misconstrue what others are saying.

Even if he isn't, I am firmly convinced he is a troll and not worth the effort.

So why are you using so much middle eastern oil in your Silverado or what ever gas sucking pig you choose to drive?

If you did 300,000 miles in an imported Prius at $3.50 per gallon rather than a Silverado made by the good old boys in the USA.
    Silverado uses 20mpg (EPA) Highway
    Prius uses 45mpg (EPA) Highway
so over 300,000 miles you spend $53,500 on middle eastern oil in a silverado but driving a Prius over the same distance you only send $23,333.33 to Iraq, so about $30,300 less to the Taliban war effort.

I used highway consumption figures because that favours the Silverado to give a best case scenario.

Well, Not to burst your bubble but it is my right to drive as I wish. Secondly I have a use for my trucks.
Here is where the U.S.A. gets it's oil from.
    1. Canada
    2. Mexico
    3. Saudi Arabia
    4. Venezuela
    5. Nigeria
    6. Angola
    7. Iraq
    8. Algeria
    9. United Kingdom
    10. Brazil

MOST of our oil comes from Canada (BP) and Venezuela.

Source- Where does the U.S. get their oil from?

So, Maybe you need to do some research before spilling your beans when we don't even do business with Terrorists. We kill them.

Now, I'm in the US Army so My new Silverado won't cost me much to drive. I'm doing very good financially and it does not bother me to pay $3.50 a gallon. We lowered the interest rate and trying to divert a recession so that is why gas prices are high amongst plenty of other things.

People always try to single out gas without looking at the whole issue.

Your data isn't quite right. See Crude Oil and Total Petroleum Imports Top 15 Countries. Also look at regional crude oil production at World Oil Production by Region and oil reserves at World Oil Reserves by Region. Notice that most of the oil is in the Middle East? Notice how much Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia have?

Oil is a commodity. The OPEC cartel and non-member nations still benefit from the high prices even if WE the US don't get that much oil from them. Have you seen what much of the population in the Middle East think of us? Out of the top 15 countries, let's see...
    - Saudi Arabia: They're super wealthy because of oil and 15/19 of the 9/11 hijackers were Saudis. Per http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/Saudi_Arabia/Background.html, they have "one-fifth of the world's proven oil reserves,"
    - Venezuala: Hugo Chavez hates us and has threatened to cutoff oil to us Chavez threatens to cut off U.S. oil shipments - CNN.com.
    - Nigeria: They've had pipeline explosions and instability that has threatened production and delivery.
    - Iraq is #6 in the crude oil imports list. Per http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/Iraq/Background.html "Iraq has the world’s third largest proven petroleum reserves"
    - Libya: Not exactly a friendly country but at least Gaddafi is changing his ways.

Here's some tidbits about other top oil producers:
Iran: Per http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/Iran/Background.html "Iran, one of OPEC’s founding members, holds the world’s third-largest proven oil reserves, and the world’s second-largest natural gas reserves"

Per http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/Persian_Gulf/Background.html "In 2006, the Persian Gulf countries (Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates) produced about 28 percent of the world's oil, while holding 55 percent (728 billion barrels) of the world's crude oil reserves."

I can easily afford gas too at these prices but there are many that can't. The higher fuel costs leads to higher prices everywhere due to higher transportation costs.

All of us consuming petroleum products are contributing to the problem. Being shortsighted and buying guzzlers just adds to it and helps make it worse for everyone else. You think it's a good idea to keep sending more money to big oil companies and unstable regions of the world, some of which don't like us?

Exxon Mobil had an $11.6 billion profit last quarter per Exxon posts quarterly, annual profit records - Feb. 1, 2008.
"Exxon also set an annual profit record by earning $40.61 billion last year - or nearly $1,300 per second in 2007. That exceeded its previous record of $39.5 billion in 2006." BTW, that $11.6 billion in profit last quarter is about $120 million in profit a day.

I'm not expressing my views on a truck site, someone came to a Prius site and started on about his truck.
BTW, all the oil from those other contries is imported too. They are as much the enemy as Japan who I believe have been friends of the USA for over 50 years.

Thanks, an interesting read, especially the first paragaph or 2.

If there are no terrorists in Iraq why are you there?
I think the only reason your not in Saudi is too much US oil comes from there to cause disruptions there.

So, because YOU can afford to waste gas, it's no big deal. The american way, eh? We've got our God given right to waste the world's dwindling commodity, now that we've blown most of our fuel reserves. If ME ME ME can afford it, that's all that matters. Today I can afford it, and I'll worry about tomorrow when it gets here. Let the next generation figure it out, when fuel cost go to $5 and then $10 per gallon. Only you forgot something. The fuel costs filter through EVERYTHING. Fuel costs are the new financial currency. Fuel cost mean that construction / manufacturing goodies all cost more. So eventually, all the WallMart stuff will be tripple the cost, simply because it cost 3X more to deliver it, and 3X more to make it. It's because of narrow "I can afford it" thinking that we're entering into a new era. Our grandkids will spit on this generation's graves, or thank us, depending on what we do, or don't do. And if the entire world of drivers thought like you (I can afford it") then our upcoming crisis would even be worse, quicker. I hope that soon, the "I can afford it" crowd will consider a little more insight.

I just got back from Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Do you know what they pay for gas over there? $0.91

    Venezuela? $0.12

Why? They depend on there OWN resources. They drill for there own oil and turn into liquid gold baby. They don't depend on foreign countries like we do.

Answer for us? Start drilling here and refining it and it will go down considerably in price.

Maybe the good old USA should restructure NAFTA & ect. and start drilling to support ourselves.:clap2:

Maybe Germany and France should drill for their own oil too.

Maybe India will start drilling their fast oil fields. And Japan.

And maybe we'll invade Canada and steal their oil before Canadian Terrorists threaten to make us all speak French.

Dude, this is utter crap. I am in the Army too, and I m currently shopping online for a Prius. I have contacted eight dealerships in my target area and told them up front that I am in Korea with the Army and returning soon, and that I will not buy until I return. Five of eight dealerships thanked me for my service right at the first contact email they sent me. If an individual Toyota dealership is not thanking you for your service has nothing to do with the brand Toyota or their individual patriotism. Many Toyotas are made in the US, putting money in American hands, while many "American cars" are made in Mexico, Canada, taking jobs outside our country, but are accompanied by the whole Red White and Blues patriotic fanfare, as if they were 100% American.

Also, don't expect people to treat you nice just because you're in the service. I don't know if you are lower enlisted, NCO or officer, but the NCO Creed says "I will not use my grade or position to attain pleasure, profit, or personal safety", and that is what I live by. It does not mean you cannot get the military discounts and preferential if the give it to you, just do not expect it.

They also hire migrant workers from third world countries at $50-$100 dollars a month to do the drilling, they get paid crap to harvest the oil. How much do you think an oil drill worker gets in the Gulf States? It's one of the most dangerous jobs in the US and the payment is very good... If we drilled our own oil it would be a lot more expensive then Saudi or Venezuelan oil.
